Job overview

Stamford is a leading HMC independent co-educational day and boarding school located within a Georgian market town known for its historic buildings, independent retailers, proximity to the countryside and excellent transport links. Founded in 1532 as a school for boys, Stamford completed the move to full co-education in September 2023 and now educates some 1,500 children aged 2 to 18 across three excellently resourced sites.

The Governors and Head seek to appoint a dynamic, financially astute and commercially driven Chief Finance and Operating Officer (CFOO). Acting as the School’s strategic and commercial adviser this is an exciting opportunity to work in partnership with a new Head and the Governing Body on the next stage of Stamford’s development. The CFOO will help shape the School’s strategy and with responsibility for the finance, operational and professional services, candidates will be able to demonstrate proven ability in senior leadership and financial control, strategic planning and operational delivery within large complex organisations.

Reporting to the Head, the CFOO will lead a team of 110 staff and as a key member of the Core Executive Team, will deliver and manage change to ensure the School’s financial and commercial success. Whilst a formal accounting qualification is not required, they will be a collaborative senior leader, a strategic thinker with strong financial and commercial acumen, coupled with first-rate analytical and business skills. An outstanding communicator, the CFOO will strive for excellence and operate at pace.

Prior experience in the education sector and applications are encouraged from candidates with commercial, charitable, private-sector and public-sector backgrounds. The successful candidate will, however, demonstrate empathy with independent education and commitment to Stamford’s ethos and values.

A highly attractive remuneration package, including fee remission, will be available for the successful candidate.

The Stamford Schools have been educating students since 1532. Our Schools have a long and prestigious heritage, but everything we do at Stamford is focused on preparing young people to lead happy and fulfilling lives in the 21st century. At the start of the academic year 2023-2024 Stamford Schools opened its doors for the first time to teach students co-educationally at all stages as Stamford High School and Stamford School merged.

Stamford strives to offer an outstanding, contemporary education in which students develop the ability to think for themselves and to interpret the world around them. Every child at Stamford is encouraged to be an independent thinker and take the lead in their own education. Our students leave us with a flexible, adaptable mindset and an approach to learning that equips them to face the challenges and opportunities of their future.

Stamford is a dynamic, vibrant, modern, and exciting school, built on the strengths of five centuries of learning, with a resolute focus on preparing our students for 2030 and beyond. Our students leave Stamford as rounded and grounded young people, ready for life beyond education. At the heart of our all our schools is the focus on academic ambition, pastoral excellence, and the opportunity for students to become the very best version of themselves.

What is our vision at Stamford?

Stamfordians are future facing, divergent independent thinkers, emotionally intelligent and fully equipped to challenge and thrive. ‘Rounded and grounded’ is the hallmark of a Stamfordian student.

Team, Fire, Spirit – these are our School values
