Job overview

Tes is supporting the appointment of a Classics Teacher at a school in Merton.

The school is looking for a knowledgeable and well-qualified Classics Teacher to join their vibrant and supportive Classics Department.

You will teach Latin to students across the school, delivering lessons that meet their students' needs and expectations, facilitating progress and raising levels of attainment in the subject. You will work with colleagues to create a positive culture of pupil welfare and behaviour, supporting and contributing to school safeguarding whilst helping to promote the well-being of pupils.

You will be an enthusiastic, positive and hardworking Teacher with a passion for the classical world and the Latin language. You will possess Qualified Teacher Status and will provide previous experience of teaching Latin at KS3, KS4 and KS5. The ability to teach Classical Greek and/or Classical Civilisation to A Level is also desirable but not essential.

Classics at the School

There are three full-time and two part-time members of the Classics Department, who teach Latin (Years 7 – 13), Classical Greek (Years 10 – 13) and Classical Civilisation (Years 12 & 13). They currently have two Latin GCSE groups in Year 11 and two in Year 10, as well as a strong A Level cohort with healthy numbers in years 12 and 13.

The Department has a long history of running a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, ranging from Classics Clubs (‘It’s Mythical’ for year 7-9; ‘Greek c’est chic’ [an introduction to Classical Greek] for year 9 and ‘It’s Classical’, a Senior Classics society, for years 10-13.), to numerous day trips (e.g. to visit museums, galleries or see theatrical productions) and residential trips to the Mediterranean.
