Job overview
Location: Cambridge
Contract: Permanent
We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.
We are looking for a Data Protection Manager to support our global business with pragmatic and strategic data protection compliance support and advice. This role is the most senior role responsible for data protection compliance in our organisation, and would be equivalent to a Data Protection Officer in many businesses. We are looking for an experienced practitioner, who has ideally had experience of data protection compliance in the UK and internationally, and who can manage and support a small team of compliance professionals.
This is an opportunity for you to join our Legal & Business Affairs department (L&BA), which is an approachable team who aim to empower the business to make effective and ethical choices, and which is enthusiastic about operational excellence to help us continually improve the way we support Cambridge. We are a close-knit team that supports each other, enjoys solving problems, and loves changing the way our colleagues think about Legal, Business Ethics and Compliance. We are seeking team members who share our passion and our values: collaborative, innovative, empowering and responsible.
About the role
The role is a key part of our Data, Technology & Procurement team in L&BA, and you would be responsible for our Privacy Framework, working alongside our Group Records Manager on related information governance issues including Freedom of Information. It offers a varied caseload due to the changing nature of our business, the shift from print to digital, and from products to services, and also the international reach of our work as part of a global organisation with offices in over 50 countries.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Responsible for Cambridge's Privacy Accountability Framework, data protection policy, internal guidance and managing our compliance processes and procedures including SARs and ROPA.
- Responsible for recording and notifying data breaches and supporting incident response.
- Responsible for advising and supporting the business to conduct necessary DPIAs and other privacy risk assessments to embed privacy by design and by default.
- Responsible for maintenance of our Privacy Risk Register, reporting regularly to senior management and our Security and Data Privacy Committee.
- Being a key contact point within Cambridge for Supervisory Authorities and the University's statutory DPO.
- Responsible for other information governance issues and Cambridge's compliance with Freedom of Information legislation.
About you
In this role, you will report to the Assistant General Counsel - Data, Technology & Procurement.
We are looking for someone who will be an advocate for Privacy and Information Governance issues in Cambridge with demonstrable presence and credibility at senior levels of the organisation.
You will be able to:
- Confidently train and inform Cambridge colleagues about key privacy and related data issues.
- Work collaboratively with other teams/colleagues including Regulatory Compliance, Group Security, Technology, Architecture, the Information Governance Working Group, and the Freedom of Information Network.
- Thrive with ambiguity and embrace new learning and change - keeping up to date on international privacy legislation and being able to advise the business on appropriate actions in a global context.
- Work closely and communicate with the Assistant General Counsel – Data, Technology & Procurement to keep them apprised of all privacy and related issues and to support related legal and contractual issues, particularly with Technology suppliers.
Rewards and benefits
We will support you to be at your best in work and to live well outside of it. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a world-class, flexible rewards package, featuring family-friendly and planet-friendly benefits including:
- Group personal pension scheme
- Discretionary annual bonus
- Life assurance up to 4 x annual salary
- Private medical and Permanent Health Insurance
- Green travel schemes
- 28 days annual leave plus bank holidays
We are a hybrid working organisation, and we offer a range of flexible working options from day one. We expect most hybrid-working colleagues to spend 40-60% of their time at their dedicated office or location. We will also consider other work arrangements if you wish to work more flexibly or require adjustments due to a disability.
