The Sixth Form Bolton is a vibrant specialist 16-19 Sixth Form College with circa 1850 students. We are dedicated to releasing the potential of our students and staff alike. The Sixth Form is a sector leader in digital skills and staff digital development. We have a well-developed digital strategy and Professional Growth Programme that actively supports digital skills for our staff and new technologies to support teaching, learning and assessment. Most staff currently use Showbie for much of this and we have excellent links for training and support with Showbie, Sync and Microsoft. Staff have access to Teacher Matic and have regular support and training for digital skills. All staff undertake the Microsoft Educators qualifications. The College also provides a staff wellbeing programme. The Sixth Form Bolton has an excellent reputation, high standards and outcomes for its students, and this is a real opportunity for you to make a difference in people’s lives.

You would be joining a large and vibrant department. The Science department is the largest in the Sixth Form, offering A levels in: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as the BTEC Extended National Diploma and the Extended Certificate. You would be joining a department who, at its heart, is preparing the learners in science to work in STEM, Medicine and Life and Physical sciences. The majority of students progress to HE but the department has a keen focus on developing the breadth of potential careers that its learners consider, showcasing jobs in alternative fields such as energy, nano technology, climate and water. Trips and visiting speakers are an integral feature of all provision. The department also contribute to the Super curricula provision for learners on the Honours Programme for progression to prestigious universities and in addition offer enrichment opportunities through Science Academies that operate workshops, projects and live briefs. These are well attended and valued by the learners.

The laboratories in the department are high quality, modern and very well equipped supported by specialist technicians in each discipline. Course teams work collaboratively and with passion to plan and deliver high quality courses that fully develop every individual to their potential. We are looking for a leader who is keen to further develop both themselves and the provision in the department, supporting the Director of Science in developing and shaping teaching and learning across the team, looking for even more opportunities to develop the employability skills and wider experiences of learners. The Deputy Director of Science would be expected to contribute to the teaching of either A level and/or the vocational programme. Candidates from all science disciplines will be considered. Whilst we ideally would like the selected candidate to start as soon as they could we are happy to wait until September for the right individual.

The college occupies a Town Centre location providing easy access to the excellent North West motorway infrastructure and good public transport links with the rail station and bus interchange being within a few minutes’ walk of the college. Also available are the amenities of a vibrant and developing Town Centre which has embarked on a long term and ambitious regeneration plan (Vision 2030) to attract business and investment to the Borough, match workforce skills with modern opportunities and employment and build on the towns current assets to further develop a vibrant and exciting place to live, work and study.

The Sixth Form Bolton is one of the highest performing colleges in the North West of England.  We are a focused, highly ambitious community in which staff and students treat one another with care and respect, combining traditional values of discipline and good manners with contemporary best practice in teaching and technology. With a college roll of around 1700 students there are plans for further expansion due to the College’s success, growing reputation and increased applications.

The college experienced an excellent inspection in October 2023 which strengthened its ‘Good’ Ofsted grading with observations of high quality educational provision and high levels of student attendance and motivation.

The curriculum offered is predominantly Level 3 provision of A Levels and Vocational A Level programmes with around 95% of students studying at advanced level. Academies in Theatre, Sport and Science further enhance studies and help develop essential skills associated with each discipline. The College has partnerships with Bolton Cricket League supported by the Lancashire Cricket Board and we also work in association with the Octagon Theatre Bolton which is a highly respected regional theatre currently undergoing a redevelopment programme to ensure its ongoing provision of quality productions and accessibility for all.

As well as providing a range of opportunities for those students enrolled at the college, as part of our strategy on inclusion and working in the wider community we have fantastic links with local secondary schools, offering taster days and workshops to Year 10/11 pupils who may be undecided or unaware of their future opportunities to continue their studies. There is also an established and extremely successful RAY programme (Raising Aspirations in Youth) which is designed to equip more able Year 9 and 10 pupils with the necessary skills to excel in their studies and this is led by our dedicated staff with sessions, events and workshops held regularly on college premises.
