About this role

We are seeking to appoint a dynamic and enthusiastic individual as a Deputy Head Teacher. The successful post holder would:

  • Be an excellent practitioner and someone who has good understanding of the pedagogy needed for the curriculum to be implemented successfully
  • Demonstrate a commitment to developing a culture of effective coaching to improve the quality of teaching and learning
  • Demonstrate a commitment to improving student progress

The post holder is required to carry out the duties of a Deputy Head Teacher in accordance with the provisions of the current School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document and within the range of teachers’ duties set out in that document and School Development Priorities. 

Purpose

  • Providing professional leadership and management 
  • Leading strategic development
  • Implementing strategies for school improvement
  • Ensuring effective and efficient organisation and administration
  • Creating a stimulating, nurturing, happy, safe and productive learning environment that is engaging and fulfilling for all students
  • Ensuring the curriculum is broad, balanced and underpinned by the trust principles of curriculum design

With the support the Acting Head Teacher, the Deputy Head Teacher will:

  • Represent and promote Oakbank and Anthem Trust to its stakeholders, partners, and local community, always modelling the core values of Integrity, Collaboration and Excellence
  • Contribute and lead on the implementation of the Annual Academy Improvement Plan, Strategic Plan and Academy Vision
  • Produce and implement clear, evidence-based improvement plans and policies for the development of the academy 

Responsibilities and Role

Monitoring and Evaluation

  • To work with the Head Teacher to ensure that the aims, values and objectives are achieved through an effective School Development Plan.
  • With the Leadership Team, support the Head Teacher in the evaluation of the School Development Plan.
  • To meet with the Head Teacher and/or the school leadership team on a regular basis to discuss matters of policy, organisation and development.
  • To work with the Head Teacher and Assistant Head Teachers in evaluating the curriculum and opportunities for pupils.
  • To oversee data, exams and attendance across the Academy, including monitoring, analyse and development.

Staffing

  • To support with Performance Development procedures.
  • To support and champion the importance of staff well-being.
  • To share responsibility for all staff and pupils.

Staff Development

  • To support the Acting Head Teacher with leading and managing all staff and acting as a role model to ensure the highest standards are delivered at all times
  • To work with the Leadership Team to ensure opportunities for continuing professional development are in place and are linked to staff appraisal/Performance Management.
  • To work with the Acting Head Teacher to ensure individual staff accountability are clearly defined, understood and agreed and SLT expectations are subject to rigorous review and evaluation.
  • To regularly attend any relevant training and development activities both within and outside school and to attend relevant meetings.
  • To acknowledge, share and promote excellence and develop effective team working.  

Students, Parents & Carers

  • To share responsibility with the Acting Head Teacher for the discipline, behavior and welfare of all pupils.
  • To work with Senior Management and pastoral teams in ensuring that the needs of students are considered at all stages of planning in school.
  • To work with the Acting Head Teacher in creating and maintaining effective partnerships to support and improve pupil achievement and personal development.

Teaching and Learning

  • To strategically lead, monitor and evaluate the content and effectiveness of the school curriculum in partnership with the Head Teacher and Leadership Team.
  • To have a teaching commitment. 

This job description will be supported by the school improvement plan which will identify key distinct tasks and responsibilities for this role in the school year. These will be derived from ongoing school self-evaluation and other local/national priorities. The postholder’s duties must be carried out in compliance with the school’s policies and procedures including child protection and safeguarding procedures.

These duties and responsibilities should be regarded as neither exhaustive nor exclusive as the post holder may be required to undertake other reasonably determined duties and responsibilities commensurate with the grading of the post.
