Job overview

Governors are seeking to appoint a deputy headteacher who will support the headteacher to continue the positive trajectory of Maria Fidelis, building on the school’s strong foundations, continuing to grow pupil numbers (especially in the sixth form), and ensuring that we deliver the very best education that is tailored to the needs and abilities of every student.

Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ is a successful mixed voluntary aided secondary school of just over 800 students located in Camden between Euston and St. Pancras stations in Central London. The school’s origins go back two centuries, and Maria Fidelis remains deeply rooted in Camden’s diverse local community.

Inspired by the example of Marie Madeleine d’Houët, the foundress of the FCJ order, the school is a vibrant, inclusive, caring place where staff foster skills and attitudes that will help our young people reach their full potential, both academically and personally.

 The appointed candidate will

  •  Be a practising Catholic, who will strive to uphold and develop strong spiritual and moral values throughout the whole school and wider community.
  • Be a highly collaborative strategic leader with an ability to engage with a range of internal and external partners to drive continuous improvement.
  • Be an inspirational leader and good communicator with a clear vision for the future of the school, building on its success to date.
  • Be committed to professional development of oneself and others.
  • Lead by example, with a ‘can-do’ attitude that inspires commitment from students, staff and the local community.
  • Have unrelenting drive to ensure all students achieve their personal best.
  • Focus continuously on narrowing the performance gaps between groups of students.
  • Have a proven track record of raising standards in teaching and learning, resulting in measurable improvement, within an aspirational, caring and accountable ethos.
  • Have experience of leading positive behaviour management strategies.

At Maria Fidelis we strive to be a community of personal academic excellence, yet equally strong in companionship, where the unique gifts of every person are recognised, nourished, celebrated, and used in the service of others. This was encapsulated in our 2021 Ofsted report:

“Pupils are polite, friendly, and caring towards each other. They are welcoming towards visitors and proud of their school community. Staff have high expectations of pupils’ conduct. They also have great aspirations for what pupils can achieve”

Maria Fidelis belongs to networks within Camden, but also cooperates with schools in nearby boroughs as well as other Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Westminster. Maria Fidelis is also part of the FCJ family. We are a diverse school community in terms of both staff and students.

The school benefits from an engaged and supportive governing body as well as a strong local community.

About Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ

Maria Fidelis Catholic School FCJ is an established and successful secondary school based in Camden, in the heart of London.  We take pride in our friendly school community and are committed to our pupils reaching their full potential. Our core principles of courage, confidence and dignity guide us in our daily practice. In 2018 we moved into a brand new, state of the art building which fully enhances the experience of both students and staff.

Maria Fidelis is a welcoming and supportive community.  We value the professional autonomy of high-performing staff and understand the different approaches different departments may need to take.  We make managing workload a high priority. All meetings, Parents’ and Open Events happen on a Thursday and staff are free to leave the site earlier on all other evenings, providing standards of marking and preparation are maintained.

We are forward-looking and progressive with many opportunities for professional development and sharing practice. Maria Fidelis belongs to networks within Camden, but also in other boroughs including Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and with other high performing Catholic Schools in the Westminster Diocese.

Maria Fidelis is situated in a fantastic location between Euston and Kings Cross Station, which makes it very easy to reach.  The British Library, Francis Crick Institute, Wellcome Trust, UCL, SOAS, LSE and Central St. Martin’s School of Art are all within a five-minute walk of the school site; the school therefore enjoys extracurricular links with several institutions, many of which offer exciting opportunities not only for our pupils, but also professional development activities for our teachers. Partnerships with City firms such as Deloitte enrich the curriculum and also allow our staff to keep ’in touch’ with the world outside of education.

Values and Vision

Maria Fidelis is focused on its Roman Catholic faith but we are also a diverse school community in terms of both staff and pupils and therefore welcome applications from anyone who supports our ethos. The school first started in 1830 serving the local Catholic community under the founder of the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ), sisters who continue to work with the school to this day. Much like other schools associated with the FCJ, Maria Fidelis is a school that promises academic excellence. The hope and expectation of the school is that students grow into the best people they can, using their talents to help others.
