Job overview
Phoenix is a multi-cultural 11-19 secondary school, serving 1,950 students in the North of West Bromwich close to the border with Walsall in the West Midlands. Opened in September 2010, as a result of the merger of two local schools, Phoenix has established itself as one of the highest performing schools in the area, an accolade achieved through commitment to continually improving the quality of teaching and learning and the provision of an exciting and dynamic learning experience for students.
Over recent years examination results have been improving rapidly and we anticipate a progress measure of around +0.21(FFT) this academic year. Phoenix is a school that aspires to turn every child’s dream into reality; believes that there is no limit to what can be achieved and succeeds through passion, commitment and determination.
Due to natural changes within the senior leadership team, we have a truly exciting opportunity for a dynamic, committed and forward thinking practitioner to join us in this high profile position, to lead pastoral delivery. As a school constantly focussed on improvement and with an ultimate goal of achieving outstanding status, we are seeking a colleague who has the drive, skills and attributes to add strength and breadth to our already strong team. You will lead the provision of pastoral care throughout the school and be the Designated Safeguarding Lead, ensuring the emotional, physical and intellectual wellbeing of the whole student body.
The Deputy Head (Pastoral) will be required to inspire confidence amongst students, parents and the pastoral team. A strategic thinker, this role will shape and develop a coherent and innovative whole-school pastoral curriculum. The Deputy Head (Pastoral) is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team and must be committed to the school’s ethos, aims and strategic direction. Our school is determined to overcome disadvantage and we place strong inclusion at the heart of this goal. Our ideal candidate will be someone with a commitment to helping all students achieve success in all its forms. Our definition of achievement goes well beyond academic results – we want all our students to be happy and successful for life.
We want to appoint the very best candidate and therefore, we are looking for candidates with the experience, skills and knowledge as defined in the personnel specification. With a proven track record of school leadership, the successful candidate will understand the importance of high visibility and to actively engage with students, staff and parents. This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to take their next step in school leadership.
As a school we have a fabulous CPD offer to support colleagues at whatever point in their career they are from our ITT to our senior leaders. We also offer our staff a supportive welfare package including, but not limited to, access to physiotherapy, nurse & doctor appointments and counselling. We also offer free flu jabs, health screening and various salary sacrifice schemes.
Phoenix is one of only a few schools nationally to benefit from the government’s priority schools building programme and our state of the art facilities are second to none.
The students and staff at Phoenix face an exciting future. If you would like to be part of a school that is committed to becoming the very best, and if you can inspire and motivate our students, you could be the person for this role.

About Phoenix
Phoenix is the largest secondary school in the West Midlands. Opened in September 2010, as a result of the merger of two local schools, Phoenix has established itself as one of the highest performing schools in the area, an accolade achieved through commitment to continually improving the quality of teaching and learning, and the provision of an exciting and dynamic learning experience for students. Our successful Sixth Form, of around 250 students, offers a broad array of Level 3 academic and vocational qualifications.
Over recent years, examination results have been constantly improving, and in 2024, we anticipate our best ever results. Phoenix’s ambition is to look, feel and behave like the best school in the country so that our students get a better deal here than they would at any other school
Phoenix was one of only a few schools nationally to benefit from the government’s priority schools building programme, and our state-of-the-art facilities which opened in 2017 are second to none. But we have not stopped there, with additional MUGAs, a climbing wall, low-level assault course and new teaching walls in every classroom with new interactive screens already added. By September 2025, we aim to have a new classroom block with gym facilities, as well as a 3G soccer pitch.
The school is proud of its achievements, its positive ethos and the excellent relationships that its ambitious and driven students have with its staff.
This is an exciting time for Phoenix’s future development and the new buildings will be a launchpad for the exciting journey ahead.
