Marlborough College Malaysia opened in 2012 and is the second campus of Marlborough College in Wiltshire. It is a thriving British day and boarding school for pupils aged 3-18 years with a wonderful community and British independent school culture.  The school comprises a Pre-Prep, Preparatory and Senior School and is situated on 90 acres in the Iskandar region of Malaysia, 10 minutes from the Singapore border and close to Johor Bahru, with over 880 pupils. There are six boarding Houses at the College, which are home to 210 boarders; the remaining pupils live either locally or in Singapore, travelling daily on buses. 

The School is a genuine expansion of Marlborough College in the UK and is managed and governed by a number of people who have a strong association with Marlborough.  As part of this genuine relationship, pupils and Beaks benefit from frequent exchanges between the two schools.

Job Description

Job title: Director in Residence/ Graduate Assistant with a Specialism in Drama

Reporting to: Deputy Head, Pastoral and Co-curricular 

Introduction to the Role

Marlborough College Malaysia is looking for highly motivated recent graduates who are interested in gaining teaching and drama experience within a school setting. The ideal candidate must be passionate, dedicated and resilient. He or she must be able to work in partnership with teaching and other educational support staff and have a positive attitude. The candidate who possess a knowledge or experience in set design and lighting would be an advantage and highly encourage to apply for the role.

Graduate of Drama/Director in Residence will be employed for the whole of the academic year, as this is a fixed term position until July 2019. Please note that new staff will need to be available for induction and orientation from mid-August 2018.

Key Responsibilities

· To direct a major school production with support.

· To lead pupils with an interest in directing.

· To assist with Shell, IGCSE, and IB exam rehearsal and performances.

· To support and inspire individual pupils, particularly those who have opted for exam-based courses.

· To assist with curriculum Drama teaching, as required.

· To accompany (and where needed) help organise theatre trips.

· To have a positive and can-do approach to the role.

· To be fully committed to the busy life of a boarding school.

Cover, Duties and Invigilation 

Graduate Assistants will be a valued part of the Common Room and with this comes the obligation to provide cover according to the duties rota that is expected of all members of the Common Room. During examination periods you will also be required to invigilate on more occasions than would be considered the average for a teaching member of Common Room. These duties are designed to expose the Graduates to a wide breadth of boarding school teaching and essential for a future career path within this type of school environment.

Tutoring in a Boarding House

You will be attached to one of the boarding Houses on the campus and will do at least one duty night per week and some weekend duties. You may be given individual tutorial pupils to mentor, which is an opportunity for you to gain experience in the pastoral side of boarding life. Precise details of what you are expected to do will be decided by the Housemaster or Housemistress of the particular House to which you are assigned and discussed with you on arrival.

Additionally, you will be expected to assist with House outings. These usually consist of some form of Outdoor Activity and take place on Saturdays or Sundays during the year, these are fun activities and range from go-karting to scuba diving and are an opportunity for you to enjoy the many attractions that Malaysia has to offer. You are also expected to attend and contribute to special House events during the year and to provide support to the pupils.

Board and Lodging

The College will provide Graduate Assistants with a self-contained one-bedroom apartment in the staff condominium. The College will also provide all meals during term-time. You will have full use of your accommodation during the holidays as well as the term time. All utility bills are covered and medical insurance will be provided, as part of the College scheme.  During your free time you will be able to use the College accommodation as a base in which to explore the surrounding region, as Malaysia is centrally located and accessible to the rest of southeast and north Asia.
