Job Overview

Required - September 2024

Hereward House is a highly successful, small, boys' prep school with exceptional exit results situated just outside of central London.

We are looking to appoint a Director of Studies to lead and manage learning throughout the school. This is a new and exciting role that will involve working closely with our Headmaster and Deputy Head to build on and secure our culture of academic excellence and our outstanding results.

The position will involve working in a small, close-knit team and, as part of this team, formulate and execute a strategy for successful navigation of the ever-changing, fast-paced, and highly competitive world of 11+ and 13+ transfer.

The role also includes responsibility for leading the Key Stage 3 (Years 7&8) section of the school ensuring these pupils have opportunities for enrichment, responsibility and development outside of the classroom. The right candidate will be ambitious for these pupils to develop their leadership capabilities and to achieve their very best across all areas of school life.

It is anticipated that there will be the opportunity to teach around a half timetable of academic lessons. This will ensure the necessary time to undertake the significant leadership and management responsibilities involved in the post.

They will acquire the self-confidence and soft skills needed in a rapidly changing world alongside a real sense of community. Together with solid intellectual foundations, Hereward House pupils leave with a strong sense of empathy, humility, and compassion.

About Hereward House School

Hereward House, a preparatory school for boys aged 4-13, was founded in 1951 and is accredited by the Independent Association of Preparatory Schools.

We aim to provide a warm, welcoming and safe atmosphere in which every child can thrive and feel comfortable. Whilst embracing the highest academic aspirations for our boys, we believe that a school should not be an exam factory. We strive to create a stimulating, purposeful, safe, and happy community, where every child feels valued and secure. We aim to be a school where boys will be encouraged and assisted to develop academically, morally, emotionally, culturally and physically. It is our belief each one should enjoy his school days and reflect upon them with pride, pleasure and affection. We are preparing boys not just for senior school, but for life.

The school seeks to provide a lively, stimulating and intellectually demanding education in a friendly and well disciplined environment. Modern approaches are employed alongside those traditional methods that have proved their worth.

The Headmaster, Pascal Evans, leads a highly qualified and dedicated team. The curriculum is varied and interesting, and almost every boy learns an instrument. Games, especially team sports, are important.  Supported by Leonie Sampson, the Chair of Governors, who has been a head for over 30 years. She can be contacted via the school number throughout the year.

By providing a happy and challenging environment, the school aims to meet the needs of the individual child, enabling him to reach the highest standards of personal achievement in both academic and non-academic fields.

Hereward House provides the firm foundation boys need in order to achieve fine results at Common Entrance and scholarship and the skills to succeed in their Senior Schools and in life.
