Job Summary: We seek a motivated and skilled EAL (English as an Additional Language) teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching English language learners at Pre-A1 to B1 CEFR levels, focusing on developing key language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A passion for teaching through literature is essential, as the role also includes using literature retellings at appropriate CEFR levels to enrich language learning.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver effective and engaging lessons in accordance with the CEFR framework, focusing on Pre-A1 to B1 learners.
- Tailor teaching approaches to improve students’ vocabulary, grammar, and language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) relevant to their CEFR levels.
- Incorporate literature retellings into the curriculum, using adapted versions of well-known texts and stories to make language learning enjoyable and contextually meaningful.
- Monitor and assess students’ progress using CEFR-aligned criteria, adapting lesson plans to meet individual learning needs.
- Encourage the use of language in real-life contexts through interactive activities, role-plays, and discussions.
- Support students’ development of academic and everyday English, promoting confidence and fluency in speaking and writing.
- Utilise can-do statements from the CEFR to guide learning objectives and help students set achievable language goals.
- Foster a positive, inclusive learning environment where students feel confident to participate and take risks in language learning.
- Collaborate with colleagues to enhance teaching methods, share resources, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the EAL program.
Language Focus by CEFR Level:
1. Pre-A1 Level:
- Vocabulary: Basic personal information, numbers, days of the week, common objects.
- Grammar: Simple present tense, subject-verb-object structures, and basic imperatives.
- Skills Focus: Understanding simple phrases and responding to familiar instructions.
2. A1 Level:
- Vocabulary: Everyday topics such as food, family, hobbies, and simple directions.
- Grammar: Present simple and continuous, basic past tense, forming questions and negatives.
- Skills Focus: Describe daily routines, ask and answer basic questions, and understand simple written texts.
3. A2 Level:
- Vocabulary: Shopping, transportation, time expressions, weather, and common adjectives.
- Grammar: Present perfect, comparatives and superlatives, modals (can, could, must), future with "going to."
- Skills Focus: Expressing opinions, describing past experiences, reading short texts, and writing simple connected sentences.
4. B1 Level:
- Vocabulary: Work, education, travel, health, and media.
- Grammar: Conditionals, reported speech, passive voice, relative clauses.
- Skills Focus: Understanding the main points of conversations, expressing detailed opinions, writing more structured paragraphs and short essays.
Literature Retellings Focus:
- Use simplified versions of literary classics or folk tales, such as Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, or Pride and Prejudice, to enhance reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
- Pre-A1 to A1: Focus on basic story comprehension and vocabulary through accessible texts.
- A2 to B1: Engage students in retelling stories, summarising, and discussing themes to build language fluency and cultural knowledge.
Qualifications:
- TEFL/TESOL/CELTA certification or equivalent.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, linguistics, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Experience teaching EAL students at Pre-A1 to B1 CEFR levels.
- Familiarity with the CEFR framework and experience with can-do statements for student assessments.
- Strong interest in integrating literature into language teaching.
- Ability to create engaging, learner-centered lessons that cater to diverse learning styles and abilities.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience teaching literature or using literature-based approaches in EAL settings.
- Ability to adapt teaching materials to different CEFR levels.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and collaboration with colleagues.
