Job overview

We are seeking an international teacher of English Language (IELTS) for the International High School (G9 to G12). The start date will be mid-February 2024.

For the right candidate, there may also be a housemaster/housemistress position available. We operate day houses of around 40 students, and the housemaster/housemistress manages a team of tutors and takes the lead on house activities and some basic administration. This position carries an additional stipend and, where possible, a slight reduction in teaching load.

This position is for first language English speakers and is not suitable for NQTs. Applicants should have a minimum of two years' teaching experience of the relevant age groups and we have a strong preference for teachers who have taught in schools (as opposed universities or training centres for example) in which they have had some involvement beyond classroom teaching duties. A teaching qualification and degree are essential. We are open to teachers already in China or from elsewhere.

We offer a very competitive salary package and housing allowance which is enough to pay for good accommodation near the school. Despite the high quality of lifestyle Nanjing offers, it is a relatively inexpensive city in which to live. The usual flights and medical insurance are provided in line with typical international teaching contracts for the teacher, and a 50% contribution for a spouse. The school does not cover any flights or medical insurance for children, so please be aware of this before applying. The school offers free education for one child, but only at our school so please bear in mind that G1 to G8 is only suitable for Chinese-speaking children.

If you are wish to apply please send your c.v. and any covering message to Matt Ford (IHS Prinicipal) to "recruitment@rgsgnj.com" Your c.v. should include all of the educational institutions you attended from secondary school onwards and details of qualifications awarded. Please ensure your employment history is complete and, for schools, please include subject(s) taught, qualification(s) taught, the age groups of the students you taught and any other responsibilities you had in addition to classroom teaching.

Please provide contact details for a minimum of two referees. One of these must be from the Principal / Headteacher of the school you currently work at or worked at most recently.

RGS Guildford, Nanjing (RGSGNJ) is a partnership between Gemdale Education in China and The Royal Grammar School in Guildford, UK. RGS Guildford is a high achieving independent school with a proud history of more than 500 years. Its pupils have received some 350 Oxbridge offers over the past decade. RGS Guildford also has schools in Qatar, Dubai and Oman with plans to open more. The Gemdale Corporation was ranked by Forbes in 2018 as the top real estate company in China, with assets of some 40 billion USD.

RGSGNJ was opened in August 2020, with approximately 80 students. Now in its fourth year it has enjoyed rapid growth and now has nearly 600 students. It boasts a magnificent campus with superb facilities near the River Yangtze in the Pukou district of Nanjing, one of China's most historic cities. Pukou is a well established district, and the city centre is within easy reach. Nanjing is a green city with beautiful parks and hills. It is a very comfortable city for international staff whilst feeling traditionally Chinese. The fastest trains reach Shanghai in one hour and Beijing in three and a half hours. It is very well connected and has a busy international airport.

As a bilingual international school, the Chinese National Curriculum is taught in Grades 1 to 9 and an International Curriculum in Grades 10 to 12 (The International High School, IHS). The school is currently seeking IB authorisation for the PYP and MYP as a vehicle to delivering the Chinese National Curriculum in a manner than better prepares the students for international education. International teachers are employed throughout the school and make up nearly half of the teaching team in the IHS. The IHS curriculum is based on IGCSEs and A levels. The majority of our leavers go on to universities in the UK, USA and Australia.

The IHS operates a House system and Tutor system. Developing skills and extracurricular activities are important to us and our teaching team contributes to school life beyond classroom teaching. The school is not an "exam factory". The IHS is run by an international principal who was appointed from his role of International Education Director at the UK parent school.
