OUR SCHOOLS

Teachers in the NT teach some 33 000 children in 153 government schools spread across 1.35 million square kilometres. Schools are grouped into six regions:

  • Darwin: 28 schools
  • Top End: 35 schools
  • Big Rivers: 28 schools
  • East Arnhem: 13 schools
  • Barkly: 13 schools
  • Central: 36 schools

Of the 153 government schools, 73% are located in remote and very remote areas, with 46% of the NT’s total student population attending those remote schools.

Some 44% of all our students in the NT speak a language other than English at home.

You can find a list of urban and remote schools by region here.

For full information on every school in the NT, see the schools directory here.

LIFE AS A TEACHER LIVING AND TEACHING IN THE NORTHERN TERRITORY IS AN EXPERIENCE LIKE NO OTHER

At 1.35 million square kilometres, from the turquoise water and lush rainforest of the Top End to the iconic landscapes of the Red Centre, the NT is a big place. About six times the size of Victoria, in fact.

For all that space, the Territory’s population is just under 250 000— with people living in rich and vibrant communities scattered all over the NT, from the cities and country towns to some of the most untouched corners of the country.

Our sparse, youthful population (the median age here is just 31), vast land, wild landscapes and rich mix of people, nationalities and culture make teaching in the Northern Territory a special experience.

OPEN SOME DOORS

Taking your career to the Northern Territory will open doors. Many teachers who choose to work in Territory develop unique skills that fast-track their career and open up career paths that wouldn’t have been possible in other parts of Australia.

You can join many teachers who’ve had the life-enriching experience of working in the NT’s remote and very remote areas.

PASSIONATE ABOUT MAKING A DIFFERENCE?

Life as a teacher in the NT is best suited for educators who are professionally driven by the enthusiasm to make a difference in the lives of young people. You’ll need a passion for working in diverse environments and helping to build a brighter future for students.

WE’LL REWARD YOU WELL

NT educators are some of the highest-paid teachers in the country. They have access to extensive opportunities to diversify their skills and become specialist educators and school leaders.

We’d love you to come and join us!
