About the College
Christ’s College was established in 1850 and is currently New Zealand’s only independent school for boys, catering for Years 9 to 13. Located in Christchurch, Christ’s College is blessed with expansive grounds adjacent to the Avon River, and Hagley Park.
The College has a proud Anglican heritage, with an emphasis on classical education, expansive offerings across cultural, sport, and co-curricular programmes, and a House system that provides the boys with a sense of belonging and purpose. Boarding has been at the heart of Christ’s College for more than 160 years and is fundamental to its operation and mission; ‘Each boy at his best’. The College’s three Boarding Houses are located at the centre of the campus.
About the Role
This is a rare opportunity for an exceptional leader to build on and ensure the College continues to thrive as a compelling education and development environment for boys in New Zealand and internationally.
The Executive Principal will provide exceptional strategic and operational leadership, including executive accountability for marketing, finance, facilities, staff, and resources, as well as effective liaison with the College community and other stakeholders.
A modern educational approach will be crucial in building on current outstanding academic achievements and in continuing to develop ‘best practice’ curriculum and co-curricular activities.
Astute decision-making will ensure that College continues to provide a pre-eminent, progressive, and aspirational education environment.
Skills and Experience
Candidates should be passionate advocates for boys’ education with a track record of achievement at Principal level through inspiration, initiative, good judgement, and superior relationship building skills.
Given the Chief Executive nature of the role, broad strategic, commercial, and general management skills are essential, as are well-honed communication and influencing abilities, including experience of working with an active and engaged Board.
The successful candidate will have:
- Strengths in fostering strong relationships with the College’s diverse stakeholder community and a strong public presence that combines strength, confidence, and humility in leadership style.
- Proven experience of delivering educational excellence across academic, pastoral, sporting and cultural endeavours and the ability to innovate, initiate and manage change.
- An understanding of Special Character Schools, based on the Christian faith, preferably independent school experience and an understanding of the importance of Boarding and the House system.
Most importantly, the successful candidate will be able to articulate and demonstrate a commitment to the College’s values as an Anglican institution: of honesty, respect, spirituality, justice, compassion, and stewardship; and be committed to the College mission.
Given the importance of Boarding in the life of the College, it is expected that the successful candidate will live on site in the Executive Principal’s residence.
