Job overview
Brentwood School is seeking strong language graduates to train as secondary school French teachers.
Brentwood School is the lead school for the North London & Essex Hub of the National Modern Languages SCITT, a school-centred, subject-specialist teacher training programme focused on addressing the critical shortage of Modern Languages teachers. Discover a unique teaching training experience with the SCITT approach, setting it apart from conventional teacher training programmes:
- Immerse yourself in the school environment from the outset, culminating in the achievement of both qualified teacher status (QTS) and a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE) at the end of the year.
- Engage in hands-on classroom experience with two diverse school placements in our partner schools, providing a well-rounded training experience.
- Benefit from expert instruction, as all aspects of the course are taught by experienced Modern Foreign Languages specialists, and the subject-specific PGCE is delivered and awarded by Sheffield Hallam University.
- Access training through Hub sessions at Brentwood School and national training days organised by the NML SCITT central office, offering a comprehensive and varied learning experience.
Successful candidates will receive a £26,000 bursary (subject to eligibility) for the training year, with the opportunity to apply for more substantial scholarships of £28,000 from the British Council (subject to eligibility, successful application, and selection). Trainees may also be eligible to seek financial assistance from Student Finance England for course fees (£9,535) and maintenance loans to support their educational journey.
Bursaries for subject knowledge enhancement courses of varying durations are available, subject to eligibility.
We are actively seeking candidates with the potential to become exceptional teachers. Demonstrating extensive subject knowledge in your chosen language or being a native level speaker is crucial. A good honours degree or an equivalent recognised qualification, coupled with a high level of fluency in at least one modern language, is essential for prospective candidates.
Information about taster days at Brentwood School (comprising lesson observations and an introduction to the course) can be found here or by contacting Reina Campbell on RSC@brentwood.essex.sch.uk. Applications are submitted via DfE Apply. The course start date is August 2025. Further information about the Brentwood School SCITT hub can be found here.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. A DBS Disclosure is required to Enhanced level.

First established in 1557, Brentwood School is one of the UK’s leading independent schools for boys and girls aged 3 to 18. Set within a 75-acre site, in the heart of Brentwood town, and a direct train ride from London Stratford station, Brentwood's campus provides a stimulating environment for innovative teaching and a first-class education.
The facilities at Brentwood School are of the highest quality across all areas - academic, arts and sport. Brentwood has around 1900 students, making it larger than the average school of its type, and just over 1200 of these students are in the Senior School, which includes approximately 70 boarding pupils.
Brentwood's history spans almost 500 years and its School motto, ‘Virtue, Learning and Manners’, is taken from the School statutes of 1622. The principles of academic achievement within a caring Christian ethos remain a cornerstone of the School’s philosophy today.
Brentwood School is an excellent place to work and extremely well-located. Picturesque grounds and state of the art facilities make for a wonderful and inspiring learning and working environment. The campus is in the centre of Brentwood and a walk away from all the cultural, retail, gastronomic and nightlife facilities it has to offer. It is a mere 40 minutes to London from Brentwood Rail Station and 20 minutes from Shenfield Station, and with the recent opening of the Elizabeth Line, passengers are able to reach Central & West London without having to change.

Values and Vision
Although nominally a co-educational school, Brentwood School operates the diamond structure. This essentially means that pupils are taught in a co-educational setting only up to Senior School, before being split into single-sex groups. In the Sixth Form, the classes are co-educational once again, this is intended to ensure that students get the best of both single-sex and co-educational schooling. Admission into Brentwood School is selective, either by formal or informal assessment depending on year group. The school maintains high academic standards for its students, with a high-quality curriculum built around a strong set of core subjects, and supported by a huge range of co-curricular and sporting activities.
