Geography on the world’s remotest island!
Ready for an adventure? This is your opportunity to teach in a unique community and make a real difference to our school.
Tristan is one of the UK’s Overseas Territories and is the world’s remotest inhabited island. 1750 miles south-west of Cape Town, it is only accessible by sea and takes seven days to sail here.
Make the epic journey, and you’ll be welcomed by a friendly and welcoming community. There is just one village with a population of 268, and our small school has just 22 children aged between 3 and 16.
We need specialist GCSE teachers (Maths. Sciences, Geography and English) for 3-6 month contracts. You will have a minimum of two years’ UK teaching experience and a passion for learning. A very good knowledge of UK curriculum and current best practice is essential.
The ability to work successfully with the other staff and community is essential. Our six teachers are well trained (though not qualified) with many having benefitted from training in the UK. This means the knowledge and experience you bring will have a big impact on our teachers and students.
Your outstanding interpersonal skills and openness to adventure, will help you to integrate and adapt to living in such a remote location.
We are looking for individual GCSE specialists, but this opportunity may suit a couple.
Visit www.tristandc.com for further information on the Island.
Terms: Attractive package available including free accommodation and travel. Salary negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications.
If you’re interested please send your CV and 250 word statement as to how you meet the requirements to administrator@tdc-gov.com

About St Mary's School
- St Mary's School
- Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristan da Cunha
- South Atlantic

- Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha
Tristan Da Cunha is one of a set of islands in the South Atlantic, which are the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world. The nearest populated land mass is the island of St. Helena, 1,200 kilometres away. St Mary's School is located on Tristan's only permanently inhabited locale, known as Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Discovered by Portuguese sailors in 1506, the islands have been a British territory since 1816.
The school is perfect for those wishing to work within an open and sharing community. Most of the working population are employed by the government with the fishing company employing some full time staff. Apart from their day jobs, islanders also farm, fish and work part time in the fishing factory. People are busy. The total population of the island is 260, ensuring small class sizes and close personal connections between teacher and student. Students are taught between the ages of 3-16.
First opened in 1971, the school has operated from its current campus since 1975. Facilities include five classrooms, a library, a hall with stage, a computer suite, a cookery room, and a craft/science room. School and community are located on the island's only patch of arable land, the rest dominated by a volcano that last erupted in 1961.
