Job Title: Head
School: The English School
Location: Nicosia, Cyprus
Job Start: September 2025
1,110 students | 12-18 years | Coeducational | Day
The English School is a co-educational, day school, attended mainly by Cypriot children, currently with 1,110 pupils on roll. The school offers the British curriculum leading to IGCSE and A Level examinations, and lessons are taught in English. Entry to the school at age 12 is highly competitive and most of the leavers proceed to Russell Group universities in the UK, as well as many other top universities in Europe and the USA. Although a British curriculum school, The English School stays true to its Cypriot heritage and finds ways to creatively combine the two models, with students benefiting from IGCSE/A Level curriculum alongside Cyprus' own culture and traditions. As well as being a member of HMC, The English School is BSO accredited and has regular ISI inspections.
Although a private school, the management and control of The English School is provided for by Cyprus legislation (‘The English School (Management and Control) Law, Cap. 167 (1935)). Founded in 1900 by Canon Frank Darvall Newham, The English School began with 13 students but rapidly grew to become the premier English school in Cyprus that it is today. The English School for Girls (founded in 1957) was incorporated in 1962 and The English School became the first co-educational school in Cyprus.
Students benefit from a rigorous academic programme based on the British curriculum, alongside an exceptional range of extracurricular activities and clubs, all underpinned by outstanding pastoral care. The School is traditional by nature and academically selective, however, central to its identity is its multi-cultural and modern outlook. First and foremost, The English School prepares students to access the highest quality tertiary education and to become global and democratic citizens, empowered to adopt key leadership roles in their adult lives.
At the heart of the School's activities lies its academic programme, which is modelled on the British independent secondary school system. For the first three years, students follow a broad curriculum designed to lay the foundations for public examinations and to give them a taste of all the subjects on offer. At the end of Year 3, students choose their IGCSE subjects, with a compulsory core of English Language and Literature, Mathematics, and Modern Greek or Turkish. From Year 6, students construct an individual academic programme. They opt to take four elective international A-levels (IALs) subjects plus a mandatory Greek/Turkish IAL. In Year 7, students choose to continue with three or all four of their elective IAL subjects, with the supporting programme continuing. For clarification, Year 1 at English School is equivalent to Year 7 of Key stage 3 in UK, and Year 7 at the English School is equivalent to Year 13, end of Sixth form in UK.
Sports have always been a key component of School life, aimed at developing teamwork and competitive spirit among students. The School's House system organizes both competitive and non-competitive sporting activities. Music is a vibrant aspect of the School's culture, with the choir and orchestra being active and highly successful. The School encourages students to take up instruments, providing tuition by experienced music teachers. The School's extracurricular activities and clubs are equally impressive and diverse, and students are encouraged to join them to broaden their overall education and develop team spirit and self-confidence. With over 40 clubs and societies on offer, there is something for everyone.
Under The English School (Management and Control) Law, Cap. 167, The English School is governed by a Board of Management which is comprised of prominent local figures, including, in many cases, former pupils of the school. The Board is appointed by the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Board of Management is seeking to appoint a Head to commence in September 2025. The successful candidate will be a visionary and inspirational leader, with demonstrable experience of leading academically high achieving schools, who has the interpersonal skills to lead a vibrant and diverse community, and who is aligned with the school’s vision of integrating tradition with vision and fostering global citizenship.

About The English School
THE ENGLISH SCHOOL, NICOSIA, CYPRUS
The School was founded in 1900 by the Rev. Canon Frank Darvall Newham as a multi-communal School. It is now under the general direction of the Board of Management appointed by the Council of Ministers of the Government of Cyprus. It has approximately 1,100 pupils (boys and girls) aged 11 to 18. The majority are Greek Cypriot but there is also a significant Turkish Cypriot element and quite a number of non-Cypriot origin. It is a selective school with competitive Entrance Examinations for a Year 1 intake of 144.
The Board of Management hopes to make the School a truly multi-cultural institution where respect for diversity and tolerance will be the norm, and to that end a number of measures have been taken or will be taken in the near future.
The School year is from September to June, with two-week holidays at Christmas and Orthodox Easter. This is a fee-paying day school with classes on Monday to Friday from 7.40 a.m. to 1.40 p.m.. There are approximately 100 full-time and part-time teaching staff, all highly qualified, plus 20 administrative and support staff. The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Head Teacher, a Deputy Head Teacher and five Senior Teachers, each with defined responsibilities.
The academic standard is very high, following the British educational system (AS, A2) with the vast majority of students proceeding to British Universities. The aim of the School is to give students the opportunity to acquire a solid foundation of general knowledge, the specialist qualifications for further studies and, more importantly, the ability to study and think independently and critically.
There is an extensive range of supervised extra-curricular activities and much importance is attached to the students’ participation, both locally and abroad. Through full involvement in the academic, artistic, recreational, sporting and social life of the School, opportunity is given for maximum development of the student’s individual personality, initiative and a sense of personal and social responsibility.
The School is situated in spacious wooded grounds about 2 miles from the centre of Nicosia. There are good sports facilities, futsal pitches, a well-stocked library, specialist subject rooms, and a recently built Science Building. Plans are under way for a new wing to house additional classrooms and subject rooms.
The premises also house the English Institute, which offers almost exclusively English Language courses to approximately 500 non-English School pupils between the ages 8 to 18. These courses are taught by separate part-time staff.
