Job overview

For the right candidate, this role will also provide the opportunity to be involved with shaping the digital future of SGC. The Head of Computer Science will inspire colleagues to use IT whilst also taking a measured and analytical approach to its use in the classroom. In championing the use of technology, she/he will also ensure that staff have access to training and feel supported as they implement new techniques, ideas and technologies. 

Computer Science is an established part of the College curriculum. The main programming language for GCSE and A Level is Python, so a high level of competence in this language is essential. Alongside this, familiarity with C-based languages, HTML and CSS, JavaScript, assembly, SQL, Scratch and Edublocks would be advantageous. In Key Stage 3, students receive three lessons per fortnight and study a range of projects. The theory of binary numbers and computer systems is learnt along with practical programming skills in block-based languages and Python. At GCSE, there are three lessons and a homework slot weekly, and this rises to seven at A Level. Numbers of students taking the course are solid; students are given a clear understanding as to the opportunities and demands of the course. 

This is a department which achieves high results, where the ethos is founded on teamwork between teachers and in positive, helpful relationships with students. At GCSE, students study the OCR J277 specification. The A Level students work towards the OCR H446 qualification; they are strongly encouraged to further their programming knowledge independently. All years can participate in national problem solving and development competitions. Support for students applying to elite universities is provided when suitable. Members of the department are expected to contribute to the various events, clubs and activities on offer, including surgeries and revision classes to support GCSE and A Level students, and Raspberry Pi, Lego and coding clubs. Students are offered a variety of ways to learn, e.g. with hands-on projects, practical exercises, online programming environments and collaborative tasks. The department is very well resourced with new desktop PCs, BBC Microbits, robots and a range of specialist software. Teams and OneNote are used extensively, both for resources and to set homework tasks and track achievement. There is a department office and teaching takes place in dedicated Computing classrooms, all of which have desktop PCs, large screen TVs, and headphones. 

Continuous professional development is crucial in this fast-moving subject. Members of the department are encouraged to keep updated on the examination system and attend conferences and courses. We feel that an enthusiasm for learning new skills helps us to engage our students and keep lessons fresh and relevant. We aim to give students the familiarity and confidence in using industry-standard techniques and so prepare them well for their future.

Benefits of living and working in Weybridge

Weybridge is a small popular town with a good selection of branded and independent shops, great places to eat and beautiful woodlands and canal walks. Weybridge station offers at least four trains an hour taking only 29 minutes to reach London Waterloo station.

The College is situated on the outskirts of Weybridge on an attractive 100-acre site conveniently close to the intersection of the M3 and M25 motorways and just 20 minutes from Heathrow airport.

Academics

There are over 130 teaching staff in the College with an equal split of men and women, and some staff live on campus. Rachel Owens is the incumbent Headmistress, and she and the College are members of HMC and CISC.

The school has a selective entry and is oversubscribed. The majority of children join in First Year (Year 7), although there is a smaller entry into Third Year (Year 9) and the Sixth Form (Lower Sixth). Where space allows, new students may also arrive out of these usual intakes into Second, Third and Fourth Years.

New staff and induction

There is strong support for new teaching staff starting at the College, with an extensive induction programme. Newly appointed staff are encouraged to visit in the Summer Term to receive training and guidance from the Head of Department prior to the beginning of their employment. In addition, the College offers support and on-going training for newly qualified teaching staff lead by Mr Andy Cornick, Deputy Head (Operations) who is responsible for the welfare of new staff. There is an active and social Common Room committee and a broad range of teaching staff, many who have depth of experience and knowledge of St George’s from several years with us. QTS induction is facilitated.

All the teaching staff receive excellent support from business staff: the Bursar directs over 120 College employees including administration, IT, finance and catering. The annual appraisal scheme encourages staff to develop their careers and supports them in identifying training or study to assist in their development as teachers.
