About Grainville School
Grainville School provides a broad and balanced education of the highest quality to help our students develop their knowledge and understanding, skills, talents and leadership. At Grainville we set high expectations in all that we do, to provide each student with a learning experience that best meets their individual hopes and aspirations. We value and recognise the importance of partnership with the family and the local community and in doing so we operate an open and honest dialogue with parents. The strength of this partnership is reflected in Grainville being the first school in the Channel Islands to receive the Leading Parent Partnership Award (LPPA). We are currently moving towards our Silver award as a Rights Respecting School.
Grainville offers a broad curriculum experience at Key Stage 3 and 4. In Year 7 students access the Horizon programme for one year as part of their transition into secondary school. Horizon is a ‘school within a school’ and delivers a curriculum that develops skills for learning, literacy and numeracy. In Year 10 students select 3 option subjects from 21 GCSE options including four 14-16 vocational courses at Highlands College, the local FE College, Prince's Trust and work placements.
Our school has seen a substantial rebuild and refurbishment programme in the last 20 years. The final phase opened in 2022 and provides new English, Humanities, state of the art Music facilities and Modern Foreign Language facilities.
Students take part in activity programmes which are designed to enhance the curriculum. This may include lunch time and after school activities and clubs. In June each year all students in Years 7 – 9 undertake an activity week, engaging in extra-curricular events on or off island. Year 10 undertake a 2 week work experience placement to better understand the world of work and future career choices. Students of all ages are actively encouraged to develop their leadership skills within the school through our new house system, the student council, sports leaders and the senior student prefect system. Business students have opportunities to meet local entrepreneurs and develop their skills.
Grainville is a fully inclusive school and students with Special Educational Needs are catered for throughout the curriculum. Any child with a learning difficulty is given support on an individual or in a small group basis, within the normal teaching programme whenever possible. In addition, the school has a base for students with communication difficulties within the 11-16 age groups. Specialist keyworkers support these students and monitor progress. A great emphasis is placed on self-esteem and the expression of social skills which encourage care and concern for others.
Grainville has an excellent and well respected Student Support Service. A team of form tutors, support assistants, attendance officer, educational and welfare officer and a school counsellor all support, guide and assist students throughout their time at Grainville. Form tutors move up through the school with their tutees from Years 8-11. This partnership lasts for four years after their transitional year in Year 7 and enables effective communication on issues of student progress and support. Pastoral Leaders support form tutors in Key Stages 3 and 4 and are non-teaching staff. We also have Heads of Year.
We are very proud of our school community and the achievements of our students and staff. We place a great emphasis on creating a ‘can do culture’, where students of all abilities achieve success. This can only happen in a school where students enjoy their learning, where they are inspired, motivated and challenged to do their very best. Young people leaving Grainville will be confident individuals and equipped with the necessary skills for adult life.
