Malvern College Chengdu (MCC), a fast developing all through school in China, is looking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced Head of EAL and English Department within the Senior School. The Head of English Department will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our pupils by leading a passionate team of educators, developing an innovative curriculum (with a particular focus on iGCSE and A-Level), and fostering a culture of academic excellence. The role also enhances English language learning across the school by collaborating with teachers across other subject areas to integrate language development into their teaching. Responsibilities

Curriculum Development and Implementation:

  • Lead the development and continuous improvement of the EAL and English curriculum, ensuring it meets national standards and incorporates international best practices
  • Innovate and implement engaging teaching strategies that inspire students and enhance learning outcomes
  • Set aspirational departmental goals and objectives based on high-quality teaching and learning
  • Create and utilise a departmental assessment policy
  • Conduct internal quality assurance of assessments and oversee standardisation and moderation of marking
  • Ensure assessment data is accurately recorded on schools’ systems and utilised to review topics and adjust future learning opportunities
  • Analyse both internal and external assessment data and provide early invention strategies where pupils may need additional support

Team Leadership and Development:

  •  Mentor and support English teachers, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment where learning is supported by effective teaching and assessment practices
  • Conduct regular lesson observations and provide constructive feedback to promote professional growth
  • In collaboration with SMT contribute to the processes for hiring and inducting new members of the department while supporting all English teachers through professional growth and appraisal
  • Provide professional development and mentorship to teachers in other subjects, such as Science and Maths, to enhance their ability to integrate English language learning into their teaching.

Student Achievement and Engagement:

  • Monitor student progress and implement strategies to support their academic and personal development
  • Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages pupil engagement and achievement.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Liaise with other departments to identify and promote opportunities for interdisciplinary learning
  • To follow agreed policies for communications in the school and to communicate effectively with parents of students as appropriate
  • Collaborates with co-workers and leaders to support school-wide improvement
  • Organise and lead workshops and training sessions for teachers in other subjects to develop their skills in supporting English language learning


Person Specification

  • Educated to degree level with a recognised teaching qualification
  • Experience in international English teaching and English department management role
  • Exceptional organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write and deliver copy for a range of audiences
  • Operate as an effective and inspiring team member
  • Able to resolve conflicting demands and create positive outcomes
  • Fully understand and comply with the safer recruitment policy of MCC
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products

Established in September 2015 in partnership with prestigious UK boarding school Malvern College, Malvern College Chengdu is located in the southern development zone of thriving city of Chengdu, China. It is a through-train school for pupils from 3-18 years old.
