International Community Schools, Abu Dhabi, is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Head of Science Department (HOD) to join our dynamic team. The HOD is responsible for overseeing the Science Department, ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive and high-quality science education for students from FS/KG to Year 13/Grade 12. The HOD will foster an environment that promotes innovative thinking, creative problem-solving, and inspired learning.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Leadership and Management:
  • Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Science Department, aligning departmental goals with the school's mission and vision.
  • Lead the recruitment, induction, and ongoing professional development of science teachers.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, providing constructive feedback and support to ensure high teaching standards.
  • Develop and implement departmental policies and procedures to enhance teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team culture within the department.
  • Design, develop, and continually update a rigorous and engaging science curriculum that meets local and international standards.
  • Ensure the curriculum is inclusive and caters to the diverse needs of all students, incorporating differentiated instruction strategies.
  • Integrate cutting-edge technology and contemporary educational tools to enhance teaching and learning experiences.
  • Oversee the implementation of effective teaching methodologies and assessment strategies to monitor and improve student progress.
  • Create a stimulating learning environment that encourages students to explore scientific concepts and develop critical thinking skills.
  • Support students' academic and personal growth through individualized learning plans, mentoring, and extra-curricular activities.
  • Promote participation in science fairs, competitions, and other events to inspire a passion for science and recognize student achievements.
  • Implement strategies to support students with special educational needs and those who are gifted and talented.
  • Collaborate with other department heads, teachers, and school leadership to ensure a cohesive and interdisciplinary approach to education.
  • Establish effective communication channels with parents and guardians, providing regular updates on student progress and departmental initiatives.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with external organizations, universities, and industry professionals to enhance the science program and provide students with real-world learning opportunities.
  • Represent the Science Department in school leadership meetings and contribute to whole-school initiatives and policy development.
  • Manage the Science Department's budget, ensuring efficient allocation and use of resources.
  • Oversee the procurement, maintenance, and safe use of laboratory equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in all science-related activities and environments.
  • Continuously seek opportunities for resource enhancement and funding to support departmental initiatives.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in science education, pedagogy, and technology.
  • Organize and participate in professional development workshops, conferences, and training sessions for science staff.
  • Encourage a culture of continuous improvement, reflective practice, and professional growth within the department.
  • Mentor and support emerging leaders within the department, providing opportunities for career advancement.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree in Science or a related field; advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD) preferred.
  • A recognized teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, B.Ed., or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in science at various educational levels.
  • Proven leadership experience within an educational setting, preferably as a Head of Department or similar role.
  • Strong understanding of current trends, research, and best practices in science education.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement innovative and effective teaching strategies.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with curriculum development and assessment design.
  • Proficiency in integrating technology into the classroom.
