About Oporto British School

Oporto British School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational independent, international, bi-lingual, all-through school in Portugal, serving students from the age of 3-18. The all-through school is situated in Porto.

Oporto British School opened in 1894 as an all-boys school. In 1902, non-British boys were accepted, while girls joined from 1914. It holds title as the oldest British school in Continental Europe, and welcomes pupils from over 20 nationalities each year. It follows the English National Curriculum, with students from the age of 6 being introduced to the Cambridge Primary Curriculum, and later Cambridge Secondary Curriculum. Pupils are taught both English and Portuguese, setting them up for extended opportunities across the world.

Values and vision

Oporto British School works to provide the best possible education for all students and focuses on supporting and guiding them to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to achieve their personal best across the curriculum and succeed throughout life. The all-through school teaches students to work independently and to take responsibility for their actions, leaving education as kind, responsible, active citizens who will go on to contribute positively to society. Community is at the heart of the school, where strong relationships between parents, staff and students are formed to provide a family like atmosphere where learners feel supported and cared for. A wide range of extra-curricular activities are offered to pupils across the year groups so that they can expand their opportunities outside the classroom, build in confidence and gain new skills and interests.
