Job overview

The Governors of Somerhill are pleased to welcome applications for the post of Head.

Somerhill is a leading co-educational prep school of around 600 pupils aged between 2 and 13 that is uniquely comprised of three sections – a co-educational pre-school and pre-prep from ages 2-7, and a single-sex prep section from 7-11 (girls) and 7-13 (boys). The school is located on the outskirts of the market town of Tonbridge, Kent, housed in a 400-year-old Jacobean mansion, surrounded by 150-acres of stunning parkland ideally situated for both easy access to central London and the surrounding Kent countryside.

The next Head of Somerhill will be a highly strategic and accomplished school leader, and will be committed to outstanding academic and co-curricular outcomes for both boys and girls at 11+ and 13+. Leading this multifaceted and uniquely structured school, the Head will provide inspirational, visible and ambitious leadership which engenders a strong sense of community, and will build on Somerhill’s many strengths as well as devising a compelling vision and effective strategy and direction for the school over the coming years, in light of the challenges facing the independent sector.

Working in collaboration with a supportive board of governors and dedicated staff body, the Head will drive the financial, operational and broader strategic decision making of Somerhill, and will line manage an experienced and committed Senior Leadership Team, reporting to the Chair of Governors. They will be both commercially minded and educationally innovative, able to lead Somerhill in accordance with best business practice as well as bringing a forward-thinking and aspirational pedagogy to bear, all whilst remaining engaged with the lives of the children and their families.

Finally, the Head will have first-class communication skills, a natural ability to lead and develop teams, and will demonstrate a clear alignment to the ethos, values and community of Somerhill.

We are delighted that you are interested in Somerhill.

We have a very special school here with a unique offering: the ‘best of both worlds’, the ‘ideal mix’, and the ‘place I always dreamt of finding’ are the comments we often hear from parents or visitors. With co-educational learning from 2 - 7 years, Somerhill then offers single-sex classroom lessons until children leave us for senior schools, allowing uninhibited learning and bespoke strategies for the older girls and boys with all the benefits of a co-educational setting.

Our philosophy for the children at Somerhill is straightforward: happy children want to learn. Children are happy if they can play, participate widely and start to master skills of whatever kind, and our stunning setting and outstanding facilities offer endless opportunities for children to find something that makes them smile.

We have very bright and capable pupils and send more pupils to grammar schools each year than any other local school.

Destinations include The Judd School, The Skinners’ School and Tonbridge Grammar School. Some pupils are awarded scholarships at independent schools such as Tonbridge School, Sevenoaks School, Walthamstow Hall School and Sutton Valence School at 11+/13+.

We also cater to children who find aspects of their learning more challenging and currently approximately 40 pupils receive additional support.

You will see that this really is some school, an exceptional learning environment where we grow amazing people!
