Job overview

Governors are seeking to appoint a talented and inspirational Head Teacher who will build upon the existing strengths of Jarrow School and continue its journey towards excellence in education. The current Head Teacher has been in post for eleven years and is retiring at the end of this academic year.

Jarrow School was judged to be good by Ofsted in June 2022 and since then, the school has made further progress as reflected in the improved 2023 results.

The school is in a good financial position and this has been the case over the last few years. The school is also heavily oversubscribed and is currently full in every year group.

Senior leaders and staff are committed to the school and work extremely hard for the students in their care. Students are happy and thrive in a nurturing environment which supports their individual and sometimes complex needs.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic, and creative individual, with a proven track record of success. They will have exceptional people skills, the ability to establish positive relationships with staff, students, parents and carers and further embed high academic standards.

The successful candidate may be an experienced Head Teacher looking for a new challenge or a senior leader ready for the next leadership step.

Jarrow School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) disclosure will be sought along with other relevant pre-employment checks. In line with the guidance in Keeping Children Safe in Education, we may also carry out an online search as part of our due diligence on shortlisted candidates

Application information is available at www.jarrowschool.com or telephone (0191) 428 3200. Application forms are to be returned to the school by Noon on Friday 19th January 2024.

The recruitment timetable is as follows:

Shortlisting – 25th January 2024

Interview dates – 5th/6th February 2024

Recruitment dates may be subject to change.

Interested candidates are strongly advised to visit the school. Please contact Jill Gillies (current Head Teacher) on 0191 4283200 or email headspa@jarrowschool.com to arrange this. Visits will be possible from Tuesday 9th January 2024.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to our school.

Jarrow School is housed in a landmark building in Field Terrace which was opened in November 2009.  Our facilities are of exceptional quality, with a range of specialist state-of-the art classrooms, studios and laboratories.  The provision of computers and other information technology equipment means that everyone has easy access to the school’s VLE and safe access to a high speed Internet connection.

The school also houses a Local Authority centre for autistic students and we have a range of additional resources and specialist staff in this area.

A community swimming pool is also based on our site and this is used regularly by Jarrow School students.

Jarrow School is a safe and caring place to be.  Our teaching and support staff ensure that teaching and the day to day care of our young people is first class.  Inspectors from Ofsted commented that:

‘Pupils are encouraged to contribute to the school community. These opportunities help pupils develop a sense of pride in their school. Pupils build strong relationships with their peers and staff. They feel happy and safe.’

‘The behaviour and attitudes of pupils at the school is a strength. Staff have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour and conduct. Pupils speak politely to one another, listen to staff and are welcoming to visitors to their school.’

‘Staff foster pupils’ talents and future ambitions. Opportunities for pupils to find out about the world of work are plentiful’

We pride ourselves on a curriculum that has something for everyone, tailoring the option subjects studied to suit individual needs.

Results in the school have increased significantly in recent times and we are confident that our current year 11 students will go on to produce even more outstanding results.

We have many enhanced facilities in our practical subject areas which allow us to develop skills and aptitudes such as teamwork, communication, problem solving and creativity amongst all our students. Transferable skills such as these help prepare our students for further and higher education and adult working life.

In addition we have a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students to participate in.  We also encourage visits to places of educational interest and in recent times students have enjoyed trips to London, Poland, Austria and France.

Thank you for your interest in our school.  I hope that this website will give you an insight into the high quality provision we offer.  If you still have any questions or would like to come and visit please do not hesitate to contact me at the school.

Mr P. Atkinson
