Job overview

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys

Headteacher – start date Easter 2024

Due to our exceptional Headteacher taking up headship of another school within the Trust, the Governors of Handsworth Grammar School for Boys (HGS), are looking to appoint an engaging and collaborative leader to build on the outstanding accomplishments of this highly successful boys’ selective grammar school.

The school, which was recently inspected by Ofsted and rated ‘Outstanding’ in every category, provides the fullest range of quality experiences in a forward thinking and supportive environment. Inspectors described the school as a school “where pupils have a keen desire to do well.”

King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys is a selective school that admits boys from the age of eleven and both boys and girls who wish to join the Sixth Form. Although our students come from all over Birmingham and beyond, a significant proportion live within three miles of the school, thereby helping to maintain a strong community aspect. This is the oldest surviving selective school in Birmingham, but we are forward-thinking: reaching for the future while supported by traditional foundations which emphasise the importance of hard work, self-discipline, behaviour and achievement. The site, at the heart of Handsworth, is in excellent order and has been developed and maintained to the highest standard.

Candidates will demonstrate a track record of achievement in educational strategic leadership and have the vision and energy to inspire, motivate and develop those around them. With exceptional interpersonal skills, they will be adept at communicating with a range of audiences. They will be driven by their passion and determination to transform the lives of our young people and their values will be strongly aligned to those of the Foundation. The role offers many unique opportunities to work with colleagues to deliver on strategic priorities aimed at achieving our aspirational mission.

As an integral member of the King Edward VI Academy Trust and the wider King Edward VI Foundation, the successful appointee will fully embrace collaborative working across the Foundation, contributing to fulfilling our mission of making Birmingham the best place to be educated in the UK.

The appointment is being led by Hays Leadership. Interested candidates are invited to contact Hays to arrange a confidential discussion with Chris Gartner, Director, at Chris.Gartner@hays.com or call 07595 646645.

Closing date for applications: 12 noon on Monday 2nd October 2023.
