Job overview

Castles Education is an inclusive and ambitious school for children and young people aged 6 to 16 with social, emotional and mental health needs. It is a popular school which opened in September 2022 in Gainsborough from the amalgamation of two former schools and now has 110 pupils on roll. The school has experienced a challenging recent period and was recently graded as inadequate. This judgement was expected and the school had already started a process of rapid school improvement which was recognised by inspectors. It is looking for a new Headteacher who will see this challenge as an opportunity and who has the knowledge, energy and strategic leadership experience to lead long term sustained change.

The school vision is to change lives for the better through personalised learning, nurture and preparation for life. The aim is that all pupils who leave have the qualifications, skills and social capital they need to access Post-16 further education, employment or training.

You will be supported by an experienced and effective SLT, including an Associate Headteacher, and a committed staff team who are working hard to develop a curriculum which addresses all the needs of the pupils, with three main strands: therapeutic, life skills and academic/vocational. The school is working towards a personalised approach to learning, with each student following the curriculum which is best for them and taught in the most appropriate way. The school culture is changing to embody nurture, trauma-informed practice, restorative practice and values of High Expectations, Understanding, Positivity, Respect and Equity.

As Headteacher you will provide strategic and inspirational leadership in all aspects of the school. You will manage relationships with the Local Authorities and develop sustainable, long-term plans with regard to admissions and the structure of the school. There is scope for considerable growth in the role with options for expansion in a number of areas including new SEMH schools, alternative provision and Post-16 being considered. The new Headteacher will be a key part of these exciting plans.

This is a fantastic opportunity which will require excellent knowledge of SEMH education and a proven track record of successful senior leadership. You may be seeking your first headship or be an experienced Headteacher looking for a new challenge, but regardless you must have the determination and ambition to make the school your own and to lead it to a bright future. Importantly you must be a great leader who is able to motivate staff at all levels to work together in demanding circumstances to deliver the best education to some of the most vulnerable and challenging children.
