Job overview
Lowton CE High School is a fully subscribed Church of England secondary school that serves young people aged 11 – 16 years old within the neighbouring communities of Lowton, Leigh and Atherton. Situated just off the A580 between Manchester and Liverpool, the school is easily accessible by road from surrounding areas.
At Lowton, the whole school community sees itself as one big family with Christian values and vision at its very heart, summed up by our mission statement: Caring, Learning and Succeeding.
There is much to celebrate at Lowton, not least the transformational journey that the school has been on in recent years. This was recognised in our March 2023 inspection when the school was graded ‘Good’ in all areas and noted for the ‘transformational improvement’ since the previous inspection in 2019.
This offers a firm foundation for the new Headteacher to continue to strive for excellence in all that is done, to raise academic outcomes and maintain high expectations of students and staff in a supportive atmosphere. In all that you do, you will be supported by a committed and capable Governing Body, and a Senior Leadership Team that comprises a dedicated group of experienced practitioners who have worked tirelessly and collaboratively with the current Headteacher.
It is the desire of the Governing Body that the new Headteacher will be someone who leads by example and who will themselves be a ‘light’ to colleagues and students. We try to encourage each individual to excel within a caring atmosphere. We work hard to give even the most disadvantaged students every opportunity to succeed.
For an existing Head, this could be the next big challenge you seek…or, equally, for an experienced Deputy Head with still yet untapped potential, this could be the right opportunity for you.
Whilst applications are sought from practising Christians, equally, others committed to supporting the Christian ethos of the school are warmly invited to apply.
If you believe you can provide outstanding leadership that inspires and motivates others towards excellence and ensures the very best education for all our learners, then we would love to hear from you.

About Lowton CofE High School
Lowton Church of England High School is a community where we are passionate about equipping young people to make a positive difference in the world. We are a vibrant and inclusive 11-16 comprehensive school of around 820 students, with an established reputation as a welcoming and forward-thinking learning community.
The Governors and staff of Lowton Church of England High School are committed to the provision of a high quality education in a Christian context. We aim to provide a school where we can live out our ethos of Caring, Learning and Succeeding on a daily basis and let our light shine. At the heart of the commitment is the notion of the uniqueness and infinite worth of the individual, that every person is valuable in the eyes of God and that they are, indeed, the light of the world.
Kieran Larkin joined in September 2020, with extensive Headship and school improvement experience, and has set about clarifying a mission-led, values-led ambitious curriculum vision that defines all that we want for our students.
Our ambition is not rooted in what an inspection framework is looking for, but comes from our underpinning Christian principles of caring, learning and succeeding so that every child regardless of their background or context will flourish, thrive and succeed in their time with us.
However, it is a reflection of our approach and commitment to excellence that our recent inspection - March 2023 - graded us 'Good' in all areas and recognised the strength of our vision, ambition, curriculum and leadership as a team. We do all that we do ‘through the lens of the child’.
We are a school on a mission – a Christian mission as well as an educational one. In fact, it is our firm belief that the combination of the two will have a transforming effect on the life of each child.
To learn more about the life of our school we invite you to explore our Facebook page, where we share daily updates about life in our school, read our website and visit us where you will be welcomed by friendly staff and polite students.
