Job overview

About the Role

In February 2021, Winchester College announced a bold new vision and a significant programme of change. ‘Winchester College in the 21st Century’ describes the School’s ambitions for its future and heralded the start of an exciting new phase in the School’s development. Winchester was a pioneering institution when it was founded in 1382 and this new vision will ensure the School continues to be a leader and influencer of great education on the global stage. Academically, Winchester is among the very best schools in the country and is sought after for its combination of superb teaching, pastoral care, sports, and activities. Situated in the heart of Winchester and within easy reach of London, there are few schools in the world which can claim to be as historic, distinguished, and beautiful as Winchester College.

Having been an all-boys boarding school since 1382, our first cohort of Sixth Form day girls was welcomed into the School in September 2022. They have been followed by two subsequent cohorts, who have joined existing boys’ boarding houses. From 2026, Sixth Form girls (boarders and day) will enter the newly built girls’ boarding house located on Kingsgate Park. The appointment of the inaugural Housemistress/master represents an exceptional opportunity to shape and influence the education of Sixth Form girls at Winchester College.

The position commences in September 2025, with the new house opening in September 2026, allowing the successful candidate to play a central role in the preparation for the arrival of girl boarders.

For the academic year 2025-2026, this person is expected to be a tutor in an existing boarding house before taking up the position of Housemistress/master. They will be integral in the design of the routines of the house, developing the approach to pastoral care of Sixth Form girl boarders, and in establishing the ethos of the new house. They will also play a key role in the admissions process for Sixth Form entry including speaking at open mornings and interviewing prospective pupils. They will join an experienced and supportive team of 11 current Housemasters and will play an important role in supporting the Housemistress/master of the second girls’ house when they are appointed.

Hours of Work

This is a full-time role, during term-time, and such other hours as are reasonably necessary to meet the needs of the College and the demands of the role.
