The appointed person will be able to sustain the quality of education offered to the students in the department by supporting the delivery of the curriculum in the relevant GCSE and A level subjects to enable students to meet their expected or exceed their target levels. The successful candidate will join a skilled and hard-working Science department operating within a supportive and encouraging institutional culture. We require all Science Technicians to undertake the First Aid at Work qualification.
The Grey Coat Hospital, founded in 1698, is a Church of England school for girls aged eleven to eighteen with a mixed Sixth Form. The historic foundation of the school and its current ethos are rooted in a confident and generous Christian faith and practice, which welcomes students and staff of all backgrounds and beliefs.
The Grey Coat Hospital, when last inspected, was judged to be ‘outstanding’ in all categories by OFSTED in October 2022. We are looking for someone who will:
Responsibilities:
· Set up materials for Science practical experiments
· Routine maintenance of science laboratories and preparation rooms, their equipment and services:
· Maintaining clean and tidy laboratories in conjunction with the teacher in charge of the room, including the neutralisation and cleaning up of spillages;
· Ensuring that any scientific debris or hazardous materials/spills are removed from the sinks, bench tops and other areas to provide a safe environment for cleaning staff and others. To deal appropriately with spillages during practical activities;
· Storing materials tidily and safely;
· Keeping all equipment clean including goggles, safety screens and fume cupboards;
· Looking after animals, insects and plants kept by the department;
· Carrying out regular safety checks on equipment, e.g. bunsen tubing etc.
· Under the direction of the Head of Science, maintain the stocks of science chemicals and equipment;
· Stock taking of chemicals, consumables, stationery, books and breakable items;
· Checking deliveries on arrival and querying any missing/damaged items with the supplier.
· Undertaking reprographic duties and routine ‘resource’ tasks, as determined by the needs of the Science Department;
· Other duties as directed by the Head of Science;
· Manage Science Technicians across 2 sites
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Essential:
· GCSE’s
· A-levels or equivalent in related science subjects, NVQ 3 or BTEC
Desirable
· A degree in a relevant science subject
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
· Knowledge of Science laboratory safe practices and procedures including Health and Safety legislation, COSSH procedures and other relevant regulations
· A good understanding of a range of chemicals and their properties
· Previous experience working as a technician in a school or educational establishment
· Able to prepare solutions, cultures and specimens
· Able to calibrate, clean and maintain equipment and follow safety rules
· Working knowledge of scientific principles
· Training in the use of a variety of ICT packages including Microsoft Office
· Effective and efficient communication skills, both verbal and written
· Excellent organisational skills
· Team leader skills
· Reasoning and thinking skills
· Analytical thinking skills
· Energy, enthusiasm and commitment
Contract Type: Permanent subject to a satisfactory probationary period of a minimum of six months
