The Bishop Wand Church of England School
‘Realising God-given potential’
The Bishop Wand Church of England School converted to an 11-18 Academy in August 2012. The School is situated in Sunbury on Thames, Surrey and close to the borders of the London Boroughs of Richmond and Hounslow. We are continually oversubscribed, with the majority of applicants coming from families with a religious affiliation, and have a growing Sixth Form.
Our mission statement is ‘Realising God-given potential’. The belief that every student’s achievements are valued leads to a school where the emphasis is on the achievement of the individual who is a member of a community where values of mutual understanding and respect are shared.
We were inspected by Ofsted in January 2017 and achieved ‘Good’ on all measures. We are not resting on our laurels and are already on our journey to becoming an outstanding school. In February 2023 our School achieved an “Excellent” judgement following our SIAMS inspection.
The culture within our school is one of high aspirations, significant challenge and high levels of support. This applies to both students and staff. Relationships, which are a vital part of a successful school, are strong and the Christian ethos, care and understanding pervade all our activities. Staff are our greatest resource and we strive to support each other, share good practice and develop as professionals.
We provide a full induction programme for new teachers, ECTs and support staff. We work closely with training establishments to recruit the very best staff and develop them to reach their true potential.
We recognise that extra curricular activities are a vital part of preparing students to be confident, competent and compassionate members of the adult world. The extensive PE and Sports programme provides opportunity for competition, enjoyment and the acquiring of coaching and management skills. Our 'Brighter Futures' extra-curricular programme is extensive offering our students a huge range of choice in activity. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is well established for the older students and provides an alternative activity from the sporting programme. Productions involving Drama, Dance and Music Departments are keenly anticipated by students and staff. We encourage all staff to become involved in the life of the school outside of their specialist area though appreciate that in the first year as a new member of staff priority has to be given to the core activities.
We have a full time Chaplain who is available to support all members of the School’s community and lead the School’s programme of assemblies and other acts of worship.
As part of the application process should you wish to arrange a visit to our School or would like me to answer any further questions you may have please do not hesitate to contact me. You are welcome to visit the School by arrangement as part of the application process.
