Job overview

We are looking for an outstanding and experienced Learning Support Teacher to work in our Primary and Middle School who is passionate about supporting individual pupils with learning challenges. The role is crucial in providing targeted assistance to students who face challenges in their academic journey. The Learning Support Position involves working closely with students, teachers and parents to create in inclusive and supportive learning environment, planning and preparing lessons and assessing pupil progress. The role will involve teaching and supporting students with limited English proficiency on a weekly basis, experience in this area is an advantage. We welcome applicant from all nationalities. You must be fluent in English and knowledge of French or another language will be an advantage.


Main Duties: 

  • To assist and support individual pupil(s) on the SEND register by planning, preparing and delivering lessons, assessing pupil progress and planning the next steps
  • To plan effectively to meet the needs of individual pupils with Special Educational Needs and, in collaboration with the Learning Support Coordinator (LSCO), prepare, implement, monitor and review Individual Educational Plans
  • To make or modify resources as suggested and advised by the LSCO, Educational Psychologist or other outside agencies
  • To work in partnership with the parents to promote their involvement in working with the school to achieve the best outcome for the pupil(s)
  • Identify and share the most effective teaching approaches for pupils with additional learning support needs
  • To work as part of the team to ensure that the wellbeing and personal development of the pupils enhance their learning opportunities and life skills, and develop Student Profiles for each child
  • To observe in class and provide regular feedback to the Class teacher / Head of Primary / Head of Secondary / MYP Coordinator / LSCO and relevant outside agencies (as directed) about the pupils’ difficulties and progress
  • To assess and monitor pupil progress and plan next steps for children on the SEND register
  • Teach individual and small groups of students English as a second language on a weekly basis


Person Specification:  

  • Good honours degree and/or a further degree in a directly related subject
  • Qualified SEND teacher
  • Have experience working with children with literacy and numeracy difficulties
  • Have experience working with children with communication and interaction difficulties
  • Have knowledge of effective strategies which aid children with communication and interaction difficulties
  • Have knowledge and understanding of the different social, cultural and physical needs of pupils
  • Be able to coordinate provision for a single student within a wider team
  • Provide appropriate role models of behaviour both in the classroom and around the school.
  • Have relevant experience for the role or Qualified Teacher Status / recent degree or similar SEND related qualification.
  • Has experience working with young people in a boarding school setting. Shares the educational vision of La Garenne International School including our holistic vision of education and is excited to contribute to the co-curricular and pastoral aspects of life at the school.
