Core Purpose
- To lead the AC to ensure successful and aspirational student transitions to appropriate educational settings
- To coordinate the input of other professionals to support this process
- To deploy and develop AC staff effectively
- To share and lead on best teaching practice to meet the needs of this cohort, both within Newhaven and the wider borough
- To ensure that paperwork and practice relating to SEN in the AC meets statutory requirements
- To develop and maintain appropriate relationships with parents and with relevant external organisations
- To take a full role within the school community as a Senior Middle leader, including maintaining and modelling high professional standards
- To lead on Safeguarding within the AC
Applicable Contract Terms and Duties
This job description is to be performed in accordance with the provisions of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, the 1998 School Standards and Framework Act, the required standards for Qualified Teacher status and other current legislation. The teacher shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require, under the reasonable direction of the Headteacher.
The job description may be amended at any time following discussion with the Headteacher and member of staff.
Relationships
The postholder is responsible to the headteacher in all matters which may be through the delegation of line management to another member of SLT. The postholder is expected to interact on a professional level with colleagues and other agencies and seek to establish and maintain productive relationships with them and to promote mutual understanding of the AC provision with the aim of improving the quality of SEN (including SEMH) support across the school and wider borough.
The particular accountabilities and responsibilities attached to the post of the Head of the AC are as follows:
Leading the AC provision
- To liaise with colleagues in other educational settings, RBG SEN and Inclusion departments to ensure that appropriate students are referred and admitted to the AC
- Alongside the SENCO, to co-ordinate the input of a number of professionals to assess the needs of the AC cohort
- To devise and deliver effective strategies, alongside colleagues in other educational settings, to support successful transitions into suitable educational settings
- To contribute to the annual review process for students with EHCPs
- To ensure that student transitions are managed in a timely way
- To ensure effective communications with all key stakeholders
- To raise standards of student attainment and engagement, in line with Newhaven’s policies
- To be accountable for leading, managing, monitoring and developing Newhaven staff in their expertise and understanding of meeting the needs of this cohort.
- To be accountable for the shared areas in the provision ensuring they are well presented and reflect provision aims and whole school policy.
- To lead on ensuring that school safeguarding procedures are effectively deployed and followed within the AC provision.
Management
To effectively manage the financial and physical resources within the area to support the designated programme.
- To effectively lead and manage the learning and teaching environment of the provision in conjunction with all professionals (including CP, EP, SALT , HoDs, class teachers and TAs)
Whole School Responsibilities
- To lead and inspire all departmental initiatives within the whole vision framework for school improvement.
- To lead departmental initiatives in a positive way to provide a role model for excellence and create a culture of high aspirations for the subject and whole school success.
- To promote actively the core values of the school and their translation into strategies to create excellence, self-review and self-evaluation.
- To contribute to the formulation of the whole school strategic development plan and to lead and implement the departmental development plan.
- To ensure that all whole school policies are adhered to at provision level, promote, and support the development of trauma informed practice in your department.
Operational/ Strategic Planning
- To lead the development of appropriate practices to support student wellbeing and access to the school curriculum.
- To actively monitor and follow up student progress and wellbeing
- To implement School Policies and Procedures
- To work with colleagues to formulate aims, objectives and provision development plans which have coherence and relevance to the needs of students and to the aims, objectives and strategic plans of the School.
Provision Development
- To be accountable for the development and delivery of the AC provision policies and practices.
- To lead development for the whole department, including specific departmental INSET.
- To keep up to date with national developments in practice and methodology within the AC
- To actively monitor and respond to development and initiatives at national, regional and local levels.
People Management & Development
- To take collective responsibility, with staff and the Leadership Team for the wellbeing of all staff in the department including yourself.
- To ensure that staff development ensures that personal characteristics such as race, sex and gender do not provide barriers to that development.
- To provide regular feedback for colleagues in a way, which recognises good practice and supports their development both against relevant performance management objectives and in the broader sense, resulting in a tangible impact on student and staff progress.
- To participate in the recruitment process for AC posts when required and to ensure effective induction of new staff in line with school procedures.
- To establish common standards of practice within the AC and develop the effectiveness of teaching and learning styles within the department.
- To make use of analysis and evaluate performance data provided.
- To produce reports within the monitoring, evaluating and reviewing cycle for AC.
- In conjunction with the data manager, to manage the collection of data within published timelines.
Communication and Liaison
- To contribute to AC meetings, discussions and management systems necessary to co-ordinate the work of the AC and integrate this into the work of the school as a whole.
- To liaise with the school clinical psychologist, CAMHS and other relevant agencies to ensure that each student has an appropriate and effective package of support.
- To build and maintain co-operative relationships with parents, and to communicate with them on pupils' wellbeing and progress, drawing attention to special skills and talents as well as to problems or difficulties
