About the job
St. Julian's School is seeking to appoint a highly committed and suitably qualified specialist to take on the position of One-to-One Support Teacher for an eight year old pupil in our Prep School. This is an exciting opportunity to work with a wonderful young person with a high level of academic capacity and special educational needs to support him to meet his potential.
For the right candidate, there is the potential for the role to be full or part-time, with flexible working hours depending on the needs of the candidate and the school. The position is line-managed by the Head of Learning Support in the Primary Section.
About the Pupil
The pupil is a young boy with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and a specific strength in Mathematics. He has a keen interest in computers and is skilled in typing and the use of technology. He enjoys drama and role-play. He has a wonderful sense of humour.
As a result of his profile of need, the pupil experiences challenges in demonstrating flexible thinking. He can find it difficult to understand the purpose of everyday tasks, which can result in some resistance to task-completion. When he does not understand the reason why he is being asked to do something, the pupil can find it challenging to communicate his needs in a calm voice. In the classroom, one of the specific challenges he faces is that he feels a need to share his thoughts and feelings aloud as he experiences them. He can be supported to manage this with one-to-one input. The pupil also benefits from one-to-one support with written expression, particularly producing extended pieces of writing. There are times when the pupil benefits from personalised one-to-one teaching, and the right candidate for this role will relish the opportunity to personalise the curriculum to meet his needs.
Specific responsibilities
This role is personalised to the needs of the pupil and the one-to-one support teacher will therefore be able to demonstrate flexibility and adaptability, as day-to-day tasks and objectives will vary.
Some specific responsibilities will include:
- Development of a personalised learning plan for the pupil in consultation with the Head of Learning Support and the pupil’s class teacher.
- Accompanying the pupil to class and working one-to-one with him in the context of his mainstream lessons.
- Withdrawal of the pupil for one-to-one lessons when necessary (this may vary on a day-to-day basis, depending on the pupils needs on a given day).
- Planning and adaptation of learning activities as appropriate to ensure that the curriculum is tailored to meet the pupil’s individual needs and interests.
- Planning of extension tasks, particularly in mathematics.
- Differentiation and provision of access arrangements (e.g. scribe support) as required.
- Planning and delivery of targeted intervention (e.g. social stories, social skills and other ASD-appropriate intervention).
- Playground support, including creating opportunities for the pupil to connect with peers and develop his social skills.
- Attending meetings to plan and develop the pupil’s support.

- Be a reflective, flexible practitioner with the ability to think creatively to respond to the complexity of school life.
- Collaborate with the student's school, home and other educational professionals as needed to ensure that their academic needs are being met.
- Be able to monitor and evaluate progress against agreed student targets and to provide detailed feedback

The Secondary section strives to nurture in each student a sense of self-confidence and happiness; students are encouraged to speak up for themselves and relationships between teachers and students are very positive, engaging and stimulating. At the end of Key Stage 4, students take a series of public examinations (GCSE and IGCSEs).
After age 16, St. Julian’s prepares students for university by offering courses leading to the International Baccalaureate Diploma. St. Julian’s consistently achieves strong results.
