Job overview

Our educational partner, Rockley Education, is seeking a well-qualified, enthusiastic, and motivational Outdoor Education Instructor to join our sixth form team. You will deliver the practical elements of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoors) course, run in partnership with LeAF Studio School / Authentic Education Trust.

Rockley Education, part of the Rockley group established in 1976, is the UK’s premier provider of watersports training and school and group residential holidays. Our courses offer a unique vocational experience, combining academic sport qualifications, professional instructor qualifications, and work experience.

Role Overview:

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, experienced, and well-organised Outdoor Education Instructor to join the team. As an Education Practical Tutor, you will supervise and lead the practical components of various units, including water-based and land-based skills and leadership activities. A key part of your role will be developing the practical skills and abilities of our students, completing their observation forms, and conducting practical assessments. This position is ideal for an experienced outdoor instructor interested in transitioning to a teaching environment or a qualified teacher looking to specialise and further develop their expertise in a college/outdoor education setting.

Our educational programmes are based at our working watersports centre, Rockley Point, which is on the shores of Poole Harbour. At this centre, the beach really is our playground, creating a special learning environment for students and staff. Each year, we attract positive young people to our courses. Our strong vocational approach combines hands-on, practical training with classroom learning, ensuring our students are well-prepared for their next steps, whether that’s progressing to university to study PE Teaching, starting a career as a Sports Coach, or embarking on a journey in the world of superyachts and global travel.

Key Responsibilities:

·        Practical Instruction: Deliver a diverse range of activities including water-based activities such as sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, powerboating, and raft building, and land-based activities like climbing, mountain biking, walking, orienteering, team building, and expeditions.

 ·        Session Planning: Design and deliver engaging, hands-on sessions that challenge and motivate students, ensuring they gain the practical skills and confidence needed to complete required units and excel in the outdoor industry as instructors.

·        Student Development: Help students develop their skills, guiding them to the point where they can lead activities themselves and be ready to step into the workforce as qualified instructors.

·        Assessment and Feedback: Complete detailed observation forms, conduct practical assessments, and provide effective feedback to support learners’ development and achievement.

·        Mentorship: Act as a role model and mentor, guiding students' transformation from beginners to accomplished individuals over the course of their college programme.

·        Curriculum Contribution: Contribute to the design, delivery, and future planning of the practical programme and courses, ensuring continuous improvement and high standards of student achievement.

Ideal Candidate:

This role is perfect for qualified Outdoor Education Instructors who are passionate about supporting young people and looking to advance their career in a vibrant sixth form setting. To be successful in this role, you will have instructor qualifications and experience in activities such as sailing, windsurfing, paddlesports, mountain biking, climbing, and walking. You will need to demonstrate a flexible approach, excellent organisational abilities, and strong interpersonal skills. You will be a clear communicator with robust administrative capabilities and exceptional problem-solving skills. As you will be working with young people throughout their course, it is crucial that you can build effective relationships and provide guidance, positioning yourself as a role model for the students.

What We have to Offer:

·        Engage with young people who are keen, happy, and motivated to learn.

·        Work in a collaborative and supportive team environment with staff dedicated to the success of our young people.

·        Extensive professional development opportunities, including RYA courses.

·        Enjoy vibrant staff social events

·        Free use of all equipment and facilities

·        Substantial discounts for family members or children attending any Rockley course or activity.

·        Participate in the cycle-to-work scheme.

·        Free onsite parking.

·        Access to an onsite café with complimentary tea and coffee.
