Job overview

Millfield School is seeking a Physiotherapy and/or Sports Therapy Graduate for the 2024–2025 academic year to contribute to our medical, sports, and boarding programmes. A graduate therapist year in the sports department of Millfield School will provide an unrivalled opportunity to develop your skills in one of the UK’s leading independent schools for boys and girls aged 2–18 years.

You will be involved in all aspects of the assessment, design, and delivery of rehabilitation programmes and contribute to the holistic recovery and development of our student athletes.

The Therapy graduate will have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills gained from an Undergraduate or Master’s degree. Successful candidates should be confident and reliable and have good interpersonal skills, as well as showing a willingness to be involved in all areas of school life. Physiotherapy candidates should hold membership of the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Chartered Society of Physiotherapists. Sports Therapists must be members of the British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) or the Society of Sports Therapists with full indemnity insurance to practice within the UK.

The post runs for a full academic year from September through June, with breaks for school holidays. Graduates will also be expected to work two weeks during non-term-time, which typically occurs during late August to contribute to pre-school training camps (34.6 total working weeks).

Graduates with onsite accommodation will work 39 hours per week, which will be divided between sport and boarding commitments (an average of 6 hours per week on evening duties in the boarding houses and one weekend in three). You will receive £14,260.35 salary per annum (inclusive of holiday pay), plus full board and lodgings (non-monetary, to the value of £3,006.99 per annum).

Graduates not living onsite will not be expected to contribute towards the boarding programme and will work the full 39 hours per week in the athletic development department, receiving £17,267.34 per annum (inclusive of holiday pay).

There is a formal personal development programme provided as part of the placement opportunity which is overseen by the Head of Student Athlete Support and many expert staff within the department. This has a value of more than £2,500.

The modern world is highly competitive and the way we prepare our children for its demands is more important than ever. Young people today are subject to great pressures and it takes strong personalities to avoid the traps that life has lying in wait. Hence a good school must seek to develop confidence and maturity in all its pupils whatever their strengths and weaknesses.

All individuals have different needs and therefore a variety of opportunities must be available to enable each one to achieve success. They must learn to apply themselves to academic work but must also be encouraged to express their other talents.

With its outstanding facilities, a staff:pupil ratio of 1:7.5, an extraordinary range of academic courses and the unrivalled strength of its extra-curricular programme, Millfield strives to achieve all these aims. It also seeks to move with the times whilst maintaining the important traditions of good manners, discipline and respect for others.

We pride ourselves on the richness and diversity of the Millfield experience as well as the friendly atmosphere within our community.
