Responsible for: Caretaker Apprentice
It is a condition of appointment that applicants must be able to obtain an Enhanced DBS prior to appointment.
Main purpose
The Premises Manager is responsible for:
- Maintaining clean, safe and secure school premises, which includes buildings and grounds including Kenton Learning Centre (KLC)
- Carrying out cleaning, handyperson activities, routine maintenance and refurbishment, porterage, and minor repairs.
- Some supervision of school cleaning staff.
- Promoting health and safety around the school.
- Other aspects of site support, such as supervising external contractors, overseeing site use including KLC in partnership with Learn Harrow, and involvement in site development planning.
Experience
- Caretaking.
- Building maintenance.
- Security, including alarm systems.
- Cleaning work.
- Some DIY.
- Working with contractors.
- Experience of working effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Experience of working in a caretaking or site officer role in a school or similar environment.
- Experience of undertaking risk assessments and recording and implementing them (desirable).
- Experience of working with children and families in a school setting (desirable)
- Experience of planning and managing premises maintenance works (desirable)
Skills and knowledge
- Knowledge and understanding of the main Health & Safety Regulations, including COSHH and risk assessment, and how these apply within a school environment.
- Ability to manage and oversee contractors’ work.
- Ability to undertake a range of site supervision and cleaning duties.
- Ability to deal with manual handling.
- The ability to demonstrate good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all members of the school community, and external contractors etc.
- Ability to undertake minor repairs and improvements within the school.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team, and to use own initiative in a range of situations.
- Ability to work with tact and diplomacy.
- Ability to communicate and interact positively with pupils, parents and colleagues.
- Ability to use English proficiently.
- Good numeracy skills.
- Ability to organise, prioritise and complete tasks efficiently.
- Ability to work flexibly, independently and as part of a team.
- Basic DIY skills.
- Good knowledge of building industry regulations (desirable)

Physical requirements
- Be reasonably fit to carry out the duties of the job
- Able to carry out some manual handling and lifting
- Able to carry out work at high levels using appropriate equipment
- Maintain the security of the school premises as the main key holder
- Lock and unlock the premises including KLC as required, including out of school hours when necessary
- Check at the end of the day that all windows, doors and gates are locked, lights switched off, and gas and electrical appliances are turned off
- Set security alarm systems, report any potential security breaches, and respond to any alarms or other call-outs following agreed procedures
- Carry out regular checks of CCTV and alarm systems, locks, fire safety appliances, security gates and perimeter fencing, and ensure any necessary repairs are actioned
- Advise the headteacher on all matters relating to school security and safety
- Act as a primary contact for alarm call outs.
