The school:

Established in 1981, Brookhouse is a co-educational, independent day and boarding school on two campuses serving the international community in Nairobi, Kenya at pre-school, primary and secondary levels. Brookhouse is a Round Square school, and a member of the G-30 group of schools. The school is registered with the Kenyan Ministry of Education, and fully accredited by the Cambridge International Examination (CIE) Board UK, by IAPS (Independent Association of Preparatory Schools), by the ISEB and by the Council of International Schools (CIS).

More than forty nationalities are represented amongst the school's 1200 student body, and the faculty of 140 staff include British expatriates and teachers from Africa and Asia. All teaching staff have a Bachelor's degree, and several have advanced degrees.

Brookhouse follows the British Curriculum and strives to develop each student’s intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth to their full potential. Brookhouse provides the opportunity for students to learn the skills necessary to further their education and to function successfully in the modern world. A Brookhouse education focuses on strong academic performance, a wide range of subject choices, experienced and committed teachers, a supportive pastoral environment and a rich and varied programme of sports, cultural and extra-curricular activities. Two Campuses – One Family

The 15-acre Karen campus lies 10km southwest of downtown Nairobi, while the 15-acre Runda campus is to the northeast of the city. Facilities on both campuses include multi-purpose classrooms, specialist science and computing labs, art and music studios. Each campus has a performance auditorium, multi-purpose hall, library, gym and aerobics studio, indoor sports centre, swimming pool and athletic fields. A large on-site boarding facility at the Karen campus provides accommodation for 200 students.

The academic year at Brookhouse is divided into three terms. Term 1 runs from mid-August to mid-December, Term 2 from January to March, and Term 3 begins in April and ends in mid-June. Final examinations are taken in June, and constitute 100% of the grade allocation by the UK examining boards.

The role:

The Preparatory Head will be responsible for the overall strategic leadership and expansion of Brookhouse Preparatory School, Karen. S/he will maintain the highest academic standards, establish and develop pastoral care structures and ensure a first-class approach to teaching and learning at the school. The Preparatory Head will ensure that every child under their care is given the opportunity to excel and that safeguarding is an important part of the day-to-day operations of the school.

The Head will be a member of the cross-campus Collaborative Management Team (or CMT), playing a significant role in formulating, implementing and reviewing policy and practice.

Key responsibilities;

  • Ensure that the school’s vision, mission, ethos and strategic development are clearly articulated and understood by members of the Brookhouse community
  • Ensure that agreed school policies are being implemented, regularly reviewed and updated
  • Lead the appointment, appraisal and management of all Preparatory School staff
  • Monitor, manage and implement the school budget and resources, curriculum, calendar and timetable, CPD programme, examinations and reporting systems – and provide regular reports on the same to the CMT
  • Participate in the teaching programme and by example provide an outstanding role model as a classroom practitioner
  • Support and guide members of staff, promoting a united staff, working for the good of the school
  • Liaise with parents, students and staff on admissions, academic programmes and discipline matters
  • Manage Safeguarding roles, responsibilities and procedures within the campus
  • Ensure that marketing is effectively undertaken
  • Ensure that student progress is effectively communicated to parents
  • Ensure that there is a culture of respect throughout the whole school
  • Help to create and maintain an attractive, effective and exciting environment for learning
  • Promote the image of the school.

About us

Brookhouse School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational, international all-through school with boarding in Kenya, serving students from the age of 2-19. The all-through school is situated in Langata, Nairobi.

Brookhouse School follows the British National Curriculum, with pupils going on to sit IGCSE exams and International A levels, allowing for them to go on to study at university level anywhere in the world. Facilities include music rooms, art rooms, a dance studio, sports grounds, sports courts and computer suites fitted with Apple Macs.
