Professionalism

All staff are expected to demonstrate professionalism by following the guidelines in the IAA Code of Conduct, which is signed annually by each staff member, the Policy manual, and the employment contract. The standards in these documents include but are not limited to:

  • Upholding the professional standards of IAA in work and in community relationships.
  • Observing confidentiality regarding all matters relating to employment with the IAA both within the school, as appropriate, and outside of the school
  • Upholding all IAA policies and procedures
  • Publicly supporting the school and neither organising nor participating in any activities that could bring the reputation of IAA into disrepute
  • Communicating effectively and appropriately with the school community, both orally and in writing.
  • Responding to communications in a timely manner
  • Maintaining open and consistent channels of communication with parents regarding student progress
  • Meeting deadlines and keeping records
  • Participating in school events such as parent conferences and professional training that may occur outside of normally contracted working hours 

Tasks and Responsibilities:

 

To be responsible for:

§ Selecting materials appropriate for the grades covered

§ Teaching library and informatics classes

§ Conducting orientation programs

§ Providing staff development classes for teachers in library skills and informatics

§ Coordinate and integrate library services across the curriculum

§ Implementing information skills curriculum integration into the

§ Providing in-service training sessions to faculty

§ Promoting the use of the library

§ Evaluating the collection

§ Overseeing budget expenditures allocated for the senior library

§ Participating in HOD and other staff meetings and workshops.

§ Assuring safety procedures are in place for the protection of property, staff, and students.

§ Developing a Library Resource Guide, updated on an annual basis

§ Providing instruction on using resources and on research techniques

§ Assisting students in developing listening, viewing, reading, and interpretation skills

§ Administering discipline within the guidelines of established IA-A policy

§ Serving on curriculum committee

§ Planning and directing the activities of library staff.

§ Notifying faculty and students of new materials, services, and equipment.

§ Continually evaluating library programs and implementing changes as needed

§ Protecting each user’s right to privacy and confidentiality in the library.

§ Preparing or arranging displays on a regular basis

§ Notifying students of overdue materials

§ Performing inventory at the end of year

§ Preparing reports as requested by the Head of Libraries.

§ Distributing publishers catalogs to appropriate faculty and staff

§ Establishing a PR program covering all aspects of the library operation

§ Evaluating the collection on a continuous basis

§ Performing other professional responsibilities as needed

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies:

The Librarian should have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Library Science; or English literature; or any combination of education (Masters in Library or Library/Information Science with teaching qualification preferred).
  • Certification in School Librarianship
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in school libraries
  • Knowledge of basic computer applications—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access

 

Desirable qualities:

  • Ability to work independently as well as a team orientated environment.
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written formats
  • Possess a good degree of higher level cognitive skills such as interpreting, analyzing, extrapolating and differentiating.
