At The John Roan School we are relentless in our pursuit of excellence. We aim to ignite ambition in every student through teaching that empowers and inspires; a calm and disruption-free learning environment; and a strong character education programme.

We have one overriding, audacious ambition that drives us – to be the very best school in the Greenwich area, giving confidence to parents and carers that their child will not only achieve their best academically, but also thrive in their time with us. Our school PRIDE ethos represents our expectations of everyone in our school and is at the core of everything that we do.

Founded in 1677, The John Roan School is one of the oldest state schools in the country. The school is a mixed ability co-educational 11 – 18 school set across two sites a short walk apart in the heart of Greenwich. We became part of United Learning in 2019, and we are already seeing the results of our continuing journey of rapid improvement.

We are a proudly inclusive school with a Centre for Autism, a thriving SEND provision and growing numbers of students with English as an Additional Language.

The John Roan School values personal development, and on joining the school you will have a wealth of opportunities to develop through our internal CPD programmes and within the United Learning group of schools. Our staff team is diverse and reflects the multicultural student population of the school at all levels.

We are part of United Learning, a large, and growing, group of schools aiming to offer a life-changing education to children and young people across England.

United Learning schools work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. The subject specialists, Group-wide intranet, own curriculum, and online learning portal all help us share knowledge and resource, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance.

As a Group, we can reward our staff better: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately, the satisfaction of helping children to succeed. We invest in our staff wellbeing. Our academies each have at least eight INSET days per year (with three of those solely dedicated to planning), and an ongoing group-wide wellbeing programme. It's an ethos we call ‘the best in everyone’.

We are working hard to become a more diverse organisation – which is key to our commitment to bringing out the best in everyone. We welcome applications from everyone committed to this ethos and would particularly welcome applications from black and minority ethnic candidates, who are currently under-represented in the Group as a whole. We always appoint on merit. We are open to discussing flexible working options.

United Learning is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All positions are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring check from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and shortlisted candidates will be subject to an online check.

Here at United Learning, we are committed to ensuring our employees feel valued and appreciated. Because we are a group, we can reward you better than any school could alone, and this includes your employee benefits. Here is some information about the benefits available to United Learning School Support Staff and Teaching Staff

Thank you very much for your interest in becoming Principal of The John Roan School.

Since its founding in 1677, The John Roan School has a long and distinguished history of educating the young people of Greenwich. Today the school remains at the heart of the community and has pledged to provide a rich, broad and varied education to all the pupils it serves. The school is part of United Learning, having joined the group in 2019. Over the past 5 years the school has undergone rapid improvement under the effective leadership of the outgoing Principal, who is moving on to an Executive Leadership role. With a strong curriculum, good teaching, effective pupil support and a comprehensive education with character programme, there are firm foundations in place at The John Roan for a new leader to continue the school’s journey to excellence.

The position is an exciting opportunity for a Principal who believes that extraordinary academic success is possible and can draw together a team that delivers it. We are looking for a Leader with a clear vision, the focus to drive improvement at pace and shares the Trust’s determination to do their best for young people. The Academy is a great match for someone with the highest expectations, determination, resilience and compassion in equal measure. You will be a team builder, able to motivate staff and pupils. You will expect a lot from people and provide strong support for them.

United Learning is deeply committed to the progress, success and safeguarding of all children and young people. We believe in serving local communities through creating excellent schools which provide outstanding education and support all the children of the area. Our Principals are central not only to the leadership of their school but also to the collective leadership of the Group. As a Group, we aim to offer more by working together than any single school could on its own: we aim to support and develop leaders, provide excellent professional development for all staff and offer broader experiences for children and young people.

We are committed to fairness, diversity and inclusion. We are currently working hard to improve the representation of black, Asian and minority ethnic leaders at headship level and to raise our proportion of women leaders to match their representation in our wider workforce. Whoever you are, if you have a strong track record of improving young people’s education and a drive to do more, we very much look forward to hearing from you.
