Job overview

Principal

The Group Chief Executive and Trustees of United Learning are delighted to accept applications for the position of Principal, Surbiton High School, following Rebecca Glover’s seven years of exceptional service.

Founded in 1884, Surbiton High School is a leading independent school proudly educating c.1,650 pupils across a Boys’ Prep, Girls’ Prep and an all-girls’ Senior School. At the School’s core is the belief that the happiness and success of every child are the key foundations upon which their future success can be built, and that strong pastoral support must be coupled with exceptional teaching and a constantly evolving curriculum for each pupil to flourish and thrive.

Surbiton High School is a place where every child is valued, encouraged to give their very best, and has the chance to grow in confidence. Delighting in the individual and celebrating diversity are key facets of the school’s identity, and, located on the outskirts of London, Surbiton High School is ideally placed to attract and retain pupils of all backgrounds and cultures.

Surbiton High School is part of United Learning, a group of state maintained and independent schools operating across the UK and educating some 55,000 students in over 100 schools. Surbiton High School was the first school opened by the then Church Schools Company in 1884, and the group has since grown to offer mutually beneficial and unique interactions between state and independent schools, with a mission to bring out the best in everyone.

The Principal has overall responsibility for Surbiton High School, heading the Leadership Team, which includes both the Head of the Boys’ Preparatory School and the Head of the Girls’ Preparatory School. The successful candidate will have a strong track record of leadership and an understanding of strategic oversight and management at board level. Experience of working within a school group will be preferable, and sound judgement, strong communication skills and understanding of the mission and values of Surbiton High School will be essential.
