Job overview
Outwood Academy Ripon is a popular and highly regarded school with 730 students across years 7-11. Though the academy retains its Post 16 designation, its sixth form is suspended with no students on roll. The academy is situated in the small, beautiful and historic cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, very close to the A1 and A19 making it easily accessible for commuting. The academy is Ripon’s non-selective secondary school and takes pride in providing a great school for its community. The academy’s facilities provide an excellent learning environment for its young people to thrive with buildings that are architecturally rich, and well-designed specialist facilities. The school is now seeking a Principal with the vision, personality, and strategic thinking to lead one of the most popular schools in the area. You may be seeking your first headship or be an experienced Principal/Headteacher looking for a new challenge, but regardless you must have the determination, ambition and value in the power of great education to lead the academy to be exceptional.
OAR is a welcoming and supportive school, judged to be outstanding in 2022, with a relentless determination to provide the very best education for every child. Working alongside a bright and energetic Senior Leadership Team, you will lead a committed and talented staff team to place students at the centre of everything, with a focus on creating a culture of success and a positive climate for learning. Critically, the excellent focus and engagement of the students allows teachers to teach and for them to succeed with outcomes strong. This is a fantastic opportunity to take up the leadership of OAR as it works to sustain and drive its outstanding journey under the current Ofsted framework. Your challenge will be to continually inspire staff and students to be exceptional in all they do.
OAR joined Outwood Grange Academies Trust in 2011. It is nationally recognised as one of the highest performing MAT’s in the country and is one of the founding trusts of the National Institute of Teaching. The Trust embraces the opportunity to ensure that all children, irrespective of their starting point, receive an excellent education and relishes the opportunity to be a key partner in the communities it works in. It is one of the largest MAT’s in the country and with that OAR can draw on a range of expertise. The Trust works across geographical sub-regions with OAR part of the central region which comprises 6 schools based in North Yorkshire and Wakefield. The Principals from the schools work closely together, sharing best practice and supporting one another to ensure continuous and never-ending improvement for the regions’ students. As Principal you will be empowered to lead OAR, fostering its own unique identity. Your professional development will be a priority for the Trust with excellent access to a full suite of CPD opportunities through the brand-new National Institute of Teaching, significant opportunities to engage in Trust wide and cross-phase projects and through expert support from the highly experienced executive leadership team.
This is an exciting time for the school and the new Principal. If you have a proven track record of school improvement as a senior leader in a secondary setting this role offers a fantastic opportunity to lead the future success of OAR. The successful candidate must be motivated to ensure that the school’s mission, vision and values are realised and delivered consistently and effectively. They will ensure that the needs of the young people are met through high quality teaching and support that maximises all pupils’ potential and enables them to be enthusiastic and independent learners. Above all, you will share the school and Trust’s commitment to putting Students First, raising standards and transforming lives.

We are proud that Outwood Academy Ripon is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-16 academy based in the cathedral city of Ripon, near the UNESCO World Heritage Site encompassing the magnificent Studley Royal Deer Park, including the well-preserved Cistercian Fountains Abbey. Our success is one of the most impressive in North Yorkshire, and we have been recognised for our consistently excellent outcomes in progress and attainment.
Part of the Outwood Family since 2011, and judged as Outstanding by Ofsted since 2016 we retained our Outstanding status in a recent inspection, an inspection which stated that ‘Pupils are supported by caring staff who know them well”, “Pupils know that learning is important and apply themselves diligently to their work’” and noted that the relationships between staff and students are ‘very strong and behaviour around the academy is of a high standard.’
We aim to promote the highest standards of academic achievement through inspiring teaching and learning, with a curriculum designed to stretch and enrich our students’ experience. Our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs, and we have won numerous awards as a school including the Carnegie Mental Health Silver Award, Anti-Bullying Alliance Bronze Award and being accredited with the prestigious IQM Centre of Excellence status, which highlights that inclusion at all levels is of paramount importance to us

Despite being Outstanding, we are constantly looking at ways to improve. Help to take us to the next level.
The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.
We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.
As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.
We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.
