Job overview

Students

The oldest boy is 14.  He is a fast, capable and independent learner that rarely needs reminding to complete his homework.  He has strong mathematical skills and has been studying algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to a high level.  He is an avid reader and enjoys writing.  He can create vivid imagery, though he can improve his grammar and syntax.  He is learning Mandarin at school and takes a keen interest in Chinese culture as an aspect of his identity.

The boy is a gifted sportsman, and plays a range of sports including soccer, skiing, and basketball.  He is competitive by nature, which accounts for his strong drive and motivation to succeed, but he loves being part of a team and is well respected by his peers.  He can be introverted and thoughtful, and able to reflect on things deeply.

His favorite teachers are energetic and able to push him to succeed while allowing him to develop independent study skills.  He dislikes teachers who are unfair and seemingly playing favorites.  He loves to be outdoors and enjoys watching his favorite Premier League football team.

The girl (12) is an enthusiastic scholar.  She loves school and is well liked by her teachers.  With her prior tutor, she made great strides in her literacy and numeracy and is now one of the top students in her class.  Her desire to excel sometimes stops her from trying new things, but her confidence is growing in her math and English skills, and she understands that making mistakes is a key part of making progress.  Her vocabulary, spelling and grammar are areas for more work.  She can focus well during tutoring sessions and is meticulous in her work.

The girl is a beautiful dancer and enjoys skiing and playing with her dog.  She is popular, energetic, fun, thoughtful, and very kind.  She responds well to teachers who are gentle and patient; she likes those who encourage rather than push their students.  She enjoys crafts, playing in the park and travelling.  She is also learning Mandarin at school and has shown a keen interest.

The youngest boy is 10; he is charismatic, warm and has a delightful, curious nature.  He demonstrates a strong foundation in subjects across the board.  An assessment in summer 2023 found a degree of ADHD, but he tested quite high in terms of intellect and all academic disciplines.

He is a capable mathematician and a proficient reader who tackles new words with enthusiasm and responds to what he is reading by asking many questions.  He has been working on his handwriting and writing stamina and produces some very creative texts.  He enjoys learning new rules or spellings if they are taught in a fun, energetic manner.

He is very creative and has a musical ear.  He is a capable young man with a positive, confident attitude and an easy-going nature that allows him to join new groups easily.  He is a keen skier and plays pickleball.  His favorite teachers are patient, fun and kind, firm and motivating, but not intense.  He responds best to a structured routine, but also loves learning on field trips away from the classroom.

Role of the Tutor

The family moved from London, where the children followed the American curriculum, to Utah.  The children have settled well into their second year at a Salt Lake City private school.  They had a positive experience with their previous Tutor who supplemented their full-time London education, and their family want a similar outcome in Utah.

This is another after-school, supplementary education role.  The Tutor should support all three children, helping them develop strong academic foundations and good habits that will last a lifetime.  The aim is to provide a superlative education and to nurture a curiosity in the children which allows them to explore a full range of activities, subjects, and specialisms, to find their passion and unlock success and happiness – academically or otherwise.

The eldest boy is entering high school next year and will need to begin the college admission process.  The Tutor should be proficient in ACT/SAT and other standardized test preparation.  They should have experience with ADHD behavioral therapy.  The younger boy works with a therapist to coach him in executive functioning tactics – a daily Tutor will enhance this development.

The Tutor will help the children follow a rich educational pathway of excitement and adventure, with kindness, patience and understanding at its root.  They will inspire the children, encouraging them to develop a love of learning for its own sake.  The family are happy to use electronics academically, but prefer their children to avoid recreational use.  The Tutor must respect this, using electronics only where appropriate.

The Tutor will understand education theory and the American system.  A knowledge of Mandarin would be helpful.  They should be a role model for the children - always polite and helpful, and mindful of their position in the family.  They should be upbeat, friendly, and engaging.

The Tutor should explore available supplementary school modules, extending the work set and bringing each lesson alive.  They must be exceptionally well organised and a good record-keeper.

The family want to teach their children the value of ‘service learning’.  The children have recently started volunteering at various local charities.  Respect and kindness should be two core values which run through the heart of every lesson.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor should expect to work an average of about 40 hours per week, likely consisting of after-school support on weekdays and some weekends.  Flexibility from the Tutor is required.  The Tutor will always be entitled to at least two consecutive days off per week and if the Client asks the Tutor to move their ‘weekend,’ they will give at least two weeks’ advance notice.

Occasionally, the Tutor may be asked to stay at the house on a weekend, working with the other household staff to manage the children’s routines while their parents are away.  These rare requests will always be made with lots of advance warning, and the family will ensure the 40 hours a week is never exceeded.

The Client may request the Tutor take holiday at certain times providing they give the Tutor a minimum of two weeks’ notice.

Accommodation, Travel and Miscellaneous

The family will provide furnished accommodation, and a four-wheel drive car.  All utility bills for the property save for the Tutor’s own phone bill will be covered by the Client.

If the family choose to travel, it will likely be to their properties in the US.  The Tutor will accompany them for any change of location.

The Tutor must be a non-smoker and lead a healthy lifestyle.  They will be responsible for their own health, possessions, and travel insurance.  This role is ideally suited to someone who enjoys the many outdoor pursuits on offer in Utah including sledding, skiing, hiking, biking, etc.

The Tutor must have clean driving record as they will occasionally take the children to various activities.
