Job overview

Emanuel School has an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified Rowing Coach to play a key role within their boat club.

As a Rowing Coach you will be involved in all levels of rowing at the school, providing high quality rowing coaching to students of all abilities. You will support all aspects of school rowing and the day-to-day running of the boat club, which will involve assisting with administration, regattas, training camps, logistics and minor equipment maintenance.

We are looking for a personable, confident and self-motivated individual, with a British Rowing coaching qualification and a RYA Powerboat qualification or a willingness to acquire these as soon as possible. You will also need to hold a clean driver's license, with the ability to drive a minibus and tow a trailer. Previous experience of coaching medal standard crews at a national level, including the National Schools’ Regatta is desirable, but not essential.

This is a full-time, year-round post, working term time and school holidays. Flexible hours will need to be worked and regular weekend working will be required due to the events in the calendar.

Rowing at Emanuel

We are proud of the sport, rowing facilities and prospects of our school. We offer an impressive fleet of boats and a newly built performance gym for pupils, including 36 rowing machines split between the school and the boat house.

Emanuel has a rich history in rowing, with wins at the Schools Head of the River and Henley Royal Regatta. In recent years, girls and boys have produced solid results with two rowers in the GB process and 7 Eights racing at the Schools Head of the River, 5 crews finishing in A finals at National Schools and a win for our boys Pair.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.

About Emanuel School

“The school whole-heartedly fulfils its aims to inspire endeavour, confidence and ambition in its pupils.”

ISI Inspection Report April 2023

Welcome to Emanuel. We are a fully co-ed school of over 1100 pupils, aged 10-18, with over 200 teaching and support staff colleagues.

We are an ambitious community. This summer, 89% of grades at GCSE were awarded 9-7, which is a lift of 39% across recent years. Our A Level A*-A percentage is 64%. This is 31% higher than in 2018 and the school is now recognised as one of the best for academic achievement in the country. The last ISI Inspection report noted that: “Pupils make excellent progress across the range of subjects and significant value is added to their academic outcomes.”

We are committed to developing all our major sports and value pupil participation as well as team and individual achievement. The school’s critical build plan will see a significant investment in our on and off-site sports facilities across the next three years. The same site plan will support the outstanding creative and performing arts teaching at the school, as the school’s plans for a large specialist science teaching block will also allow us to improve our facilities for music and drama, both traditionally areas of strength. We were delighted that these areas were recognised in the 2023 Independent School of the Year Awards when we won the award for our performing arts.

Beyond the classroom, we have a thriving partnerships programme, helping to develop our pupils at all ages as they participate in this work, and benefiting the local community, with over 1000 primary school children coming to use our site and work with our pupils each month. In 2021 we won the Independent School of the Year Award for our community outreach work.

At the heart of our school is a positive and welcoming culture. We are fortunate to have a committed and talented group of colleagues, people who recognise the importance of everyone at the school having a varied and fulfilling working life, giving them a sense of personal growth and shared enjoyment.

We wish you the best of luck with your application.
