Hours per Week: 1 day per week (6 hours and 40 mins) -  08:30 -15:30  

Contract: Permanent, Term time including INSET days (39 weeks per year)

Reporting to:  Assistant Head - Welfare and Attendance

The Organisation

Matthew Arnold is a thriving community school on the outskirts of Oxford looking to appoint a School Counsellor. Matthew Arnold is an oversubscribed inclusive 11-18 school of over 1,300 pupils that serves a mix of urban and rural communities across the west side of Oxford. The school prides itself on being a high achieving school with increasing rates of progress for our disadvantaged students. This has been achieved by focusing on improving outcomes for every student and continuing staff development.

The Role

You will  provide a first-class counselling and support service to students, including support to families of students as appropriate. The role will also have a diverse range of issues including bereavement and loss, transition, eating disorders and self-harm, depression and anger management,  abuse of any kind, anxiety and fears. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support students with a diverse range of challenges and problems that they are experiencing
  • Working closely with the Assistant Head - Welfare and Attendance and report on number of  students using the counselling service as well as a general overview of the types of problems with which the users of the service are presenting
  • Develop and contribute to projects and initiatives that will support the welfare and development of students
  • Manage cases effectively by operating on a referral basis 
  • Communicate the purpose of the school’s Counselling Service to students, staff, parents, governors and external agencies
  • Perform duties within the codes of practice and ethics recommended by the BACP, UKCP or equivalent organisations
  • Network with personnel from other agencies with a view to easing referrals and accessing specialist consultants
  • Maintain suitable case records on the counselling provided and ensure confidentiality

Requirements

  • The ability to build and form good relationships with students, colleagues, parents/carers and external agencies 
  • Post-graduate Diploma or Master's level in Counselling or Psychotherapy
  • Accreditation to Governing Body i.e. BACP, UKCP or equivalent
