Job overview
We are currently looking for new co-opted governors to join our friendly governing body. Our governors come from a range of different backgrounds, skills and experience but all share a common interest of wanting the best possible education for the children in our school.
Governors are essential for the effectiveness and success of the school and it is an extremely rewarding and fulfilling role.
All school Governors serve a 4 year term. They act as a ‘critical friend’, working voluntarily to strategically oversee the running of the school.
We would be delighted to hear from anyone who:
- Is interested in children’s education and the performance of the school
- Is community spirited and would like to represent the community
- Has spare time and the energy for the role
- Is able to work well as part of a team
- Has an enquiring mind and the confidence to ask questions and debate issues that affect the school
- Can consider matters objectively and make informed judgements
What is the role of the governing body?
- Helping to set and review the schools strategic direction and agreeing targets for improvement
- Holding the headteacher and school leaders to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure public money is well spent
What does the role offer?
- A chance to develop your own personal skills
- Access to a programme of free training in respect of education/governance matters
- A sense of achievement in helping make a difference to children reaching their potential
- The support and guidance from fellow governors
When do the meetings take place?
- There are approximately 6 meetings per year, one per half term. These take place on Tuesday evening starting at 5pm.
Will I be eligible to be a school governor?
These volunteer positions are open to parents/carers or other people from our community. Co-opted governors are not elected by a parent election but are instead appointed directly by the governing body.
In looking to fill these vacancies we are particularly interested in applications from people with education experience and also people who can occasionally visit the school during the day, although please do not be put off if you do not have these skills. What is more important is enthusiasm, interest and the willingness to learn.
We welcome governors from a diverse range of backgrounds, skills and experience to join our team as this diversity can help with better scrutiny and decision-making in the interests of all pupils.
The role is subject to a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
More information about the role and who is eligible can be found on the attached document.
How do I apply?
Using the Quick Apply function. The closing date for applications is Monday 2nd September at 9am.
Interviews will take place during week commencing 9th September.

We Are Alder
We are a community and we want all students to thrive in a happy, safe, supportive, yet challenging learning environment.
At Alder, our vision is to be outstanding in all we do. This includes students pursuing academic success and developing a set of skills which will prepare them for life beyond school. We have an ambitious academic curriculum for all students with hard work expected as standard.
We want our students to be able to form positive relationships, enrich themselves and make a valuable contribution to society.
'We Are Alder' is central to our positive ethos. Our core Alder values are evident throughout all aspects of our school.
Our Alder values aren’t simply about school – they’re about everyone, everywhere, always. They are not a temporary philosophy linked to school but a set of values to follow for life. ‘We Are Alder’ is how you get a good job or an apprenticeship, how you become a good parent, how you get promoted and how you become a good partner. It’s about success in your whole life, not just your academic life.
Our Values
We encourage our students to live by our values in all that they do.
- Altruism – having a genuine and selfless concern for others.
- Leadership – inspiring and empowering a community to achieve a shared vision by leading by example.
- Diversity – celebrating, accepting and respecting that everyone is different both in school and in our community.
- Excellence – striving to achieve your best in all that you do.
- Resilience – turning challenges into something positive and never giving up.
Our students will receive the highest quality of teaching and we invest in our staff to realise the vision. Our staff and their wellbeing are important and without them, our students could not flourish.
Students are at the centre of everything we do and increasing their life chances is our primary goal. We want our students to leave Alder as well-rounded human beings, work/college ready and able to take their place in society to contribute, enjoy life and be able to improve their own lives and the lives of others.
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment.
