(Part-time post – 10 hours per week)

A part-time librarian is required to work in this happy, friendly boys’ prep school. Flexible hours – previous experience in a similar environment is an advantage but is not essential.

Salary according to qualifications and experience.

Job Description

·      Manage the Senior Library in consultation with the Head of English and Head of Lower School.

·      Manage and supervise the pupils appointed as Librarians.

·      Control the library budget.

·      Order new books.

·      Issue and control availability of books.

·      Assist teachers with weekly form lessons for pupils to choose books and read stories.

·      Ensure good discipline is maintained in the Libraries.

·      Supervise break and after lunch in the Library.

·      Ensure the Libraries are kept clean and tidy.

·      Create and maintain displays to promote books and reading.

·      Establish good relations with the pupils, encouraging reading and advising children

·      Support World Book Day activities in conjunction with Head of English.

·      Promote authors and books.

·      Help children with research and library skills, and categorisation.

·      Liaise with teachers over resources for topics on curriculum.

 

Accelerated Reader Scheme

•     Act as administrator for the Accelerated Reader (AR) scheme.

•     Work with the English Department to analyse and advise on pupil reading.

•     Be available during daily breaks and lessons to supervise quizzing and choice of books.

•     To assess and provide a range of books for the AR scheme

•     Create and instigate new ideas and competitions to keep children focused on AR and reading.

•     Advise children on a suitable choice of book depending on their reading interests and abilities.

•     Work with Learning Support with regard to those children who need guided reading.

•     Celebrate end of term achievements at final assembly – AR Achievements and Word Millionaires.

Librarian – Person Specification – January 2025

•     Ability to inspire boys to feel confident and secure in their reading

•     Ability to enjoy working as the sole librarian although an ability to enjoy liaising with other colleagues is vital as well.

•     Ability to enable boys to enjoy reading for life.

•     A good level of competency in the use of ICT in the library.

•     Ability to offer high level and compassionate pastoral care.

•     Ability to communicate with parents effectively.

•     A well-developed sense of humour

•     An understanding that, at its heart, prep school life should be fun.

•     Willingness to promote and safeguard the welfare of all the boys.
