Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Nurse and Wellbeing officer to join our educational team at our vibrant special needs school for young adults. This joint role will play a vital part in promoting the health and well-being of students, providing nursing care, and ensuring a safe environment conducive to learning. Additionally, they will ensure that health and wellbeing services are consistently promoted and delivered across the school, in order to develop staff and student’s confidence, resilience and knowledge of coping with their duties and everyday life. This position requires strong leadership skills, effective communication abilities, and excellent time management to address the diverse health needs of students.

Duties

  • Develop and implement individualized care plans for students with chronic health conditions or special needs.
  • Administer first aid and medication as required, ensuring compliance with relevant policies and regulations.
  • Conduct health assessments and screenings to identify potential health issues among students.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff regarding health concerns and wellness initiatives.
  • Provide health education to students and staff on various topics including hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
  • Maintain accurate records of student health information, incidents, and interventions in accordance with confidentiality guidelines.
  • Collaborate with school administration to promote a healthy school environment through wellness programmes and initiatives.
  • Lead emergency response efforts during medical emergencies or crises within the school setting.
  • Contribute to the college strategy for health and well-being and personal development.
  • Assist with the teaching of PSHE, RSE and sexual health for learners with special education needs.
  • Providing brief interventions and support to enable students and staff to improve outcomes and build coping strategies as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective partnerships working with local health and wellbeing services, early help/intervention teams and other community partners to ensure timely and effective support, signposting, referrals, and intervention that lead to successful outcomes for students
  • Develop resources throughout the academic year in order to raise awareness of related issues and equip school community with strategies to keep themselves physically and emotionally well in everyday life. Supporting with staff training as required
  • Plan for and facilitate the active promotion of health and wellbeing related policies, procedures and systems as requested to support the wider personal development agenda, including the delivery of relevant activities, maintenance of display boards and publicity materials in relation to health and wellbeing service.
  • Support the senior managers to co-ordinate the school counselling services and wellbeing zones so that there are appropriate spaces in which to better understand and improve emotional wellbeing
  • Contribute to the development and support the successful implementation of robust policies, procedures and systems needed to keep the whole school community physically and emotionally healthy.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) qualification with a valid nursing licence.
  • Previous experience in paediatric nursing or school nursing is preferred but not essential.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with students, parents, and staff members.
  • Proficient time management skills to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of child development and common childhood illnesses is advantageous.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and ethical standards in all interactions.
  • Experience of working with learners special needs a distinct advantage
