Job overview

Urgently seeking an experienced SEN / ASC support tutor for 17.5 hours per week of in-person support for a 14 year-old boy with complex needs.

About

Bright Heart is an award-winning London-based tuition agency – we won the Tuition Business of the Year award in the 2022 National Tutoring Awards arranged by The Tutors’ Association (runner-up in 2023). We are also an accredited National Tutoring Programme (NTP) Tuition Partner.

We offer a more nurturing approach and help students with special educational needs (SEN) and those lacking confidence or motivation. Our heart-based approach – the ‘Bright Heart Approach’ – involves meeting the whole person from their unique perspective with warmth to build trust, self-esteem and self-belief, before building on academic abilities.

Bright Heart is committed to providing the best possible care to its students and vulnerable adults and to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

The role

Bright Heart Education’s tuition agency (an employment business) seeks an SEN / ASC support tutor with excellent written and spoken English who can support a 14-yr old boy with complex needs with activities out in the community. The right candidate would have previous epilepsy training or be willing to undergo such training.

Successful candidates will be provided with further information and guidelines on the Bright Heart Approach and relevant training for working with SEN students.

Key qualities we look for in our tutors include:

  • Passion for supporting students with SEN
  • Caring, patient and empathetic
  • Professional and diligent with a strong commitment to safeguarding

Benefits of the role

Tutors typically work as a self-employed, part-time tutor. Bright Heart provides its tutors with opportunities for professional development, including the potential for an employment contract if of interest.

We have good opportunities for those wishing to tutor many hours each week. In addition, Bright Heart offers the right candidate:

  • Competitive remuneration to attract high-quality candidates
  • A tutor incentive scheme
  • A £5 per journey travel contribution (in addition to the advertised pay rate)
  • A respectful working environment for tutors
  • On-going training
  • Company events/networking opportunities

Key qualifications

All candidates must have the right to work in the UK and a current Enhanced DBS certificate (with a check of the children’s barred list) before commencing any tutoring assignments (we can apply on behalf of a candidate if not currently held). Candidates must also provide 2 relevant professional references and a parent reference. Candidates who have lived / worked overseas in the last 5 years will also need to provide certain overseas checks, including a police certificate.

Please review the safer recruitment policy on our website for further details.

In addition, candidates should have:

  • At least 1 year of SEN experience
  • Excellent spoken and written English

Applying to Bright Heart

Please attach your CV and include a cover letter outlining your tuition experience, SEN experience and your motivation for applying to us, as well as your tutoring availability and whether you wish to be considered for the lead or support role or both. Please note that applications with a cover letter and completed skills tests will be given strong preference.

Should we progress your application, we will contact you for a brief screening call. Potential next steps include completing an application form, a pre-interview questionnaire / checks (which include online checks), an online interview with a director, contracting and an in-person meeting.

Safeguarding and safer recruitment

Bright Heart has a moral and legal obligation to ensure that, when given responsibility for young people and vulnerable adults, they are treated with the highest possible standard of care.

As disclosed in our safer recruitment policy (see our website), we aim to ensure that unsuitable candidates are deterred from applying to work with our students, and should they apply, they will not be successful in their application.

Our recruitment and selection procedures follow an equal opportunities policy. We aim to hire the most suitable candidates, with all applicants receiving fair and equitable treatment during the recruitment process.

Successful candidates will be required to sign Bright Heart’s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy (available on our website) and complete safeguarding induction and annual refresher training.

About Bright Heart Education

Bright Heart is an award-winning SEN-focused tutoring agency based in London

Bright Heart provides in-person tuition in London and parts of surrounding counties and online tuition throughout the UK. We work closely with private families, local authorities and schools, as an accredited National Tutoring Programme (NTP) Tuition Partner.

We offer a more nurturing approach and focus on supporting children and young people with learning challenges or social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs. We also help students lacking confidence or motivation or who have fallen behind at school and those needing interim education outside of school.

Tutors are carefully screened, personally interviewed by a director, and background checked (including Enhanced DBS with children’s barred list check). Tutors receive training and guidance on tutoring and safeguarding practices and adhere to our tutoring standards, Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy, and Online Tutoring Policy. Tutors have the patience, understanding and experience to ensure that sensitive learning situations are handled with care. Tutors embody Bright Heart’s student-centred approach, taking the time to listen and connect to students, enhancing trust, self-esteem, and self-belief before building on academic abilities.

Our experienced team is passionate about helping children and young people achieve their potential. Our education experts take the time to fully understand students’ unique learning needs and ensure that we provide well-matched tutors. Students receive individual learning plans (ILPs) that cater not only to their academic requirements but also to their SEMH needs. ILPs serve as a roadmap, guiding tutors to deliver tailored tuition that keeps students’ learning on track.

We cover from Reception to A-level and offer adult support. We offer supplementary tuition and interim education, covering the entire curriculum. In addition, we provide help with lifelong skills, including study techniques and transition into adulthood.

Bright Heart shines at national tutoring awards

The 2023 National Tutoring Awards, hosted by The Tutors’ Association, showcased Bright Heart’s outstanding tutoring. Bright Heart claimed runner-up positions in two headline awards – Tuition Business of the Year (winners in 2022) and Best Tuition Delivery to Private Clients. Bright Heart was also short-listed for Best Tuition Delivery to Schools.

In addition, Harris Iqbal, a Bright Heart tutor, won the Best Special Needs Tutor award (won in 2022 by another Bright Heart tutor).
