Job Specifications  

1.   The role of a Sport and Teaching Assistant is a very important one in the life of the school. It is expected that the Sport and Teaching Assistant will be approachable and friendly, but firm in their dealings with children and working always in support of the staff. It is most important that they take care not to become over-familiar with children and know when and where to seek help if they discern a problem with any child.

 2.   The Sport and Teaching Assistant should familiarise themselves with the ‘Amesbury Behaviours and Attitude Framework’ document in order understand what we believe High Performance looks like.

 3.   This is a job that demands commitment and an interest in young children and has much to commend it. The scope for individual initiative and specialisation is considerable within the parameters of the School. 

4.   To assist with general School duties as required. 

5.   To assist with sport and extra-curricular activities. While staff will be assigned to sports teams as coaches, the Sport and Teaching Assistant will be given a lot of authority to take responsibility for sports coaching under the direction of the Director of Sport, commensurate on their ability and training. 

6.   To attend induction and in-service training as determined by Deputy Head (Pastoral)

7.   To contribute on an occasional basis to extraordinary events and activities such as residential trips, boarding and school activities at the weekends.  

Personal Specification  

Essential:

§ Believe in Amesbury and be committed to its ethos, culture and values

§ A passion for sport and working with children.

§ Strong skills and knowledge in a range of sports (coaching qualifications are an advantage but not essential).

§ Reliable, enthusiastic, and motivated with a strong work ethic.

§ Ability to work as part of a team and independently.

§ Support the Teachers in improving the quality of teaching and learning

§ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

§ A willingness to learn and take on new challenges.

§ Adhere to an agreed timetable 

Desirable:

§ Previous experience working with children, ideally in a school or coaching setting.

§ First Aid or safeguarding training.

§ Recent graduate or school leaver with ambitions for a career in education, sports coaching, or a related field. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Sports Coaching & Support:
  • Assist in planning and delivering sports lessons and training sessions across a variety of disciplines (e.g., rugby, hockey, cricket, netball, athletics).
  • Provide coaching for school sports teams, including preparing for and attending fixtures and tournaments.
  • Offer tailored support to students of varying abilities, fostering skill development and enthusiasm.
  • Administration:
  • Assist with the organization of sports fixtures, including communication with other schools, preparing equipment, and maintaining records.
  • Ensure sports facilities are prepared, safe, and tidy for lessons and events.
  • Pastoral Care & Supervision:
  • Supervise students during breaks, lunchtimes, and co-curricular activities (CCAs) 
  • Build positive, supportive relationships with pupils, encouraging their personal and sporting development.
  • Events & Activities:
  • Play a key role in sports days, tournaments, and other school events.
  • Contribute to after-school care where required.
  • General:
  • Be a visible and active member of the school community, promoting the values and ethos of Amesbury School.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Sport or Senior Leadership Team.

 Accountability 

The Sport and Teaching Assistant are appointed by the Head,  

Terms & Conditions 

Salary: Age-appropriate minimum wage.

Hours: 8 – 6pm (40 hours), Five days a week during term time, including inset days.

Holidays: Work commences on the first day of term i.e. the first day of inset for staff. There is no requirement to work at half-terms or holidays.
