Job overview

We are seeking enthusiastic Teaching Assistants to provide support throughout the school year on a flexible Supply basis, for our primary school section: Early Years School (ages 3-6 years) and Junior Schools (6-11 years). At The British School of Amsterdam, we closely follow the British Schools' curriculum and we offer the best in British education to our students.

Successful candidates should ideally have some experience of working in relevant teaching-related or associated fields, specifically with younger children aged 3 - 11 years. A teaching qualification (Primary School or Early Childhood Education) or university degree are preferred, as is some experience/knowledge of the British curriculum.

Supply work will require flexible availability, sometimes at short-notice, to cover for planned or unplanned staff absences. Supply work is offered on a flexible/zero-hour contract basis. Supply work is varied and offers an excellent opportunity to familiarise yourself with our school's curriculum & processes, and can lead to further work opportunities at the school.  

IMPORTANT: Applicants should reside within commuting distance of the school and must have the legal ability to work in the Netherlands.

Key Responsibilities  

  • To provide support and assistance to class teachers in the day-to-day operating environment of the classroom and playground.   
  • To ensure a close match between the learning experiences offered and the individual needs of the children in the class, so as to give each child an opportunity to achieve the maximum of his/her capability, providing children with opportunities to manage their own learning and become independent learners.  
  • To create a secure, happy, and stimulating classroom environment, maintaining the highest standards of organization and discipline, and a high standard of display both in the classroom and in other areas of the school.  
  • To foster each child’s self-image and self-esteem and establish relationships that are based on mutual respect, and ensure that the school’s aims and objectives in relation to the curriculum, equal opportunities, and discipline are promoted in everyday classroom organization and practice.

Person specification

The successful supply teaching assistant will ideally have:   

  • Experience working with Primary aged pupils (children 6-11 years)
  • OR experience of working with Early Years pupils (children 3-6 years)   
  • Experience working with the English National Curriculum (or similar)
  • Experience and understanding of a wide range of learning abilities   
  • Professional understanding of the educational needs of children   
  • International School experience (useful)

  • Good communication skills
  • Flexible, cooperative approach to work   
  • Strong IT skills to support teaching and learning   
  • Good understanding of assessment for learning

  • A proactive approach to continual professional development   
  • Positive, good-humoured, with a willingness to learn
