Job overview

“Education is Success”

An opportunity to work in the only non-private Academy in London that offers both International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes at KS5.

Our School

Westminster Academy is an Outstanding International Business and Enterprise Academy serving a multi-ethnic community in central London. The Academy has gained national recognition for its work to improve outcomes for students and its aspirational and inclusive mission and ethos. Our longstanding 1:1 device programme allows WA to thrive as both an onsite and remote learning environment. As a member of the collaborative WA community, you will have the opportunity to shape the future of the Academy whilst working alongside an exceptionally talented group of colleagues who are committed to continued professional growth and improvement of the student experience.

Teaching at WA

WA’s ethos is committed to developing the best teachers to give our students the best possible education. We aim to use, disseminate and promote a research-led approach to develop classroom practice that enables all students to thrive and make progress. The International Baccalaureate (IB) promotes pedagogies that are student-centred and inquiry-led, and this has inspired our current strategic aims, which are looking to embed and develop these strategies further. To achieve this, we prioritise and devote generous funding to teacher professional learning, both in-house and external, to support our staff at the different stages of their teaching and leadership careers.

Our Expressive Arts department

The Academy delivers six principles of expressive arts as part of a broad and balanced curriculum offer: Visual Arts, Music, Dance, Drama, Media and Food Technology, all of which are studied by all students at KS3. The department takes advantage of exciting local and national opportunities to encourage a passion evoking inquiry and creative expression. Our Expressive Arts teachers and leaders work closely across disciplines to promote inclusion, diversity and a love of the arts, nurturing gifted and talented students via its links with the Bi-borough hubs. We are now seeking an enthusiastic colleague with a second subject to join our dedicated team and help our students realise their creative potential.

Our Art curriculum

Westminster Academy offers Art across KS3, KS4 and KS5. At KS3 we integrate the National Curriculum in lessons and teach a wide variety of mediums, techniques and artists. The GCSE in Art, Craft and Design is offered at KS4, giving students the opportunity to develop practical skills in painting as well as other media. At KS5, the IB Visual Arts course is offered in both the DP and CP programmes. The Art department achieved excellent results in 2022 with a pass rate of 85% at KS4. These results were reflected in KS5 where 100% of students passed. Our Art extra-curricular clubs are extremely popular, and our young artists enjoy collaborating with Dance, Drama, Art and Food students to produce and contribute to showcases and musicals.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • An excellent classroom teacher who is committed to the success of each individual student
  • Experienced in teaching Art with a relevant university degree
  • Flexible to teach other subject areas within or outside of the Expressive Arts department
  • Able to demonstrate an ongoing commitment to their own professional growth and development

What we offer:

  • A competitive salary and benefits package
  • Additional responsibilities remunerated via an Extra Responsibilities Allowance (ERA)
  • Sign up incentives available for experienced IB educators
  • An excellent programme of continuing professional development
  • Relevant training with the International Baccalaureate for teachers of Key Stage 5
  • A commitment to staff well being, including access to the local gym, staff social events, Perkbox membership with associated benefits
  • Free parking
  • Excellent transport links and close to central london for the social life and sights of London
